Ukraine took control of their Euro 2016 play-off against Slovenia after a deserved 2-0 first-leg win in Lviv.

Andriy Yarmolenko put the hosts ahead in the 22nd minute before Yevhen Seleznyov doubled the advantage shortly after half-time.

Ukraine had chances to add to their advantage as Denys Garmash missed a header and Seleznyov hit the post.

Slovenia rarely threatened at the other end and will have to put in a far better display if they are to overturn the two-goal deficit in the second leg on Tuesday evening.

Ukraine, meanwhile, will fancy their chances of ending their play-off hoodoo, having failed to progress to a major international tournament via the play-offs on five occasions.

They had never been beaten at the Arena Lviv and settled into their stride quickly following a minute's silence in memory of those affected by the attacks in Paris on Friday evening.



Vyacheslav Shevchuk looked a threat down the left flank and Artem Fedetsky had a shot deflected just past the post.

Yarmolenko was Ukraine's top scorer in qualifying and it was the Dynamo Kiev winger who broke the deadlock midway through the half.

After collecting Samir Handanovic's weak punch he feigned to shoot, shifted the ball onto his right foot and fired into the far corner.

Up until that point the visitors had showed little attacking threat, and a half-volley from Josip Ilicic that sailed over the top in the 28th minute was their first attempt on goal.

They had a great chance to pull level before the half-hour mark, though, when Valter Birsa fed an unmarked Milivoje Novakovic inside the area but his first touch let him down as the ball span through to goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.

Handanovic made a one-handed save from Serhiy Rybalka's long-range try and pushed Garmash's header from another Yevzhen Konoplyanka corner over the top as Ukraine ended the first period on top.

And it was no surprise to see the home side double their lead nine minutes after the break.

Again Yarmolenko was involved, finding an overlapping Fedetsky with a pass inside the full-back, and his ball across the six-yard box found Seleznyov sliding in to score from virtually on the line.

The Dnipro forward immediately checked for an offside flag, but it was not forthcoming.

Ukraine should have added to their advantage but Garmash headed at Handanovic and Seleznyov hit the post after some slack defending from Slovenia.

Konoplyanka then sliced a shot wide as Ukraine won an eighth successive international in Lviv, while Slovenia will feel fortunate to escape with just a two-goal deficit ahead of the return leg.

Sweden will take a one-goal advantage into the second leg of their Euro 2016 play-off with Denmark after a 2-1 win in Stockholm.

Emil Forsberg opened the scoring with a close-range effort on the stroke of half-time, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic's penalty put the hosts firmly in command five minutes after the restart.

Ibrahimovic had a goal ruled out for offside as the Danes struggled to contain their hosts.

But 10 minutes from time, Nicolai Jorgensen scored a crucial away goal to halve the deficit. The goal means Denmark are still very much in the tie ahead of the second leg in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Ukraine secured qualification for Euro 2016 with a 3-1 aggregate win over Slovenia after a bad-tempered second leg in Maribor.

Andriy Yarmolenko equalised on the night with the final kick of the game after Bostjan Cesar had given Slovenia hope of overturning the 2-0 first-leg result with an 11th minute header.

Referee Cuneyt Cakir had a challenging evening as both sides engaged in unnecessary bickering throughout, and Slovenia right-back Miso Brecko eventually saw red after kicking out in stoppage time.



The aggregate victory secures qualification for a European Championship for the first time in Ukraine's history - they reached the tournament as co-hosts in their only previous appearance in 2012.

The away side took a 2-0 advantage into the second leg, but that offered little comfort based on their recent play-off history. Ukraine had thrown away the same lead against France in their 2014 World Cup qualification play-off, losing their second leg 3-0 in Paris.

With the onus on Slovenia to attack, manager Srecko Katanec opted to leave out Fiorentina striker Josip Ilicic after a below-par performance in Lviv. But it was centre-back Cesar who set the tone for what would be an ugly first half with a booking after just seven seconds.

The Slovenia skipper was lucky to stay on the pitch after catching Yevhen Seleznyov with an elbow, but the Turkish referee brandished only a yellow - the first of five in the opening 45 minutes.



An early goal was crucial for the home side, and it was Cesar who broke the deadlock on 11 minutes. The centre-back headed home after Ukraine failed to deal with Valter Birsa's dangerous delivery from the right. Roman Bezjak got a crucial flick on the cross, and Artem Fedetskiy could only block the ball into Cesar's path.

Slovenia failed to test Pyatov once in the first leg, but were much improved in front of their home fans. Their high-intensity pressing seemed to startle Ukraine, and captain Yevhen Konoplyanka went into the book after five minutes as the away side struggled to maintain possession.

Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko once again looked Ukraine's most threatening attackers, and twice they came close to linking up in the first half. Yarmolenko failed to latch onto an inviting cross from his midfield partner, before returning the favour, but Konoplyanka could not convert either.

A poor cross-field path from Kevin Kampl led to Ukraine's best opportunity of the half, but Seleznyov miscued his effort into the ground and straight at Samir Handanovic.

Nejc Pecnik tested Ukraine 'keeper Andriy Pyatov three minutes before the break, and Ukraine were fortunate to get to half time with their aggregate lead intact.

Konoplyanka, so impressive in Sevilla's 3-2 win over Real Madrid before the international break, tested Handanovic with a stinging shot after a slaloming run five minutes after the interval.



Kampl continued to threaten the Ukrainian back-line with mazy runs from the left channel, and goal-scorer Cesar had an excellent opportunity to level the aggregate score on 74 minutes, but his low header from a corner was well saved by Pyatov.

Handanvoic had earlier kept out Yarmolenko and Yaroslav Rakitskiy, but Ukraine sank back towards their own penalty area as the second half progressed. Yarmolenko deflected Krhin's goal-bound effort over the bar, and substitute Zlatan Ljubijankic took too long when gifted space in the Ukraine penalty area.

Frustrations boiled over for the home side as Ukraine looked to see out the final moments in the five minutes of stoppage time, and Brecko received a red card for a nasty kick. Flares had briefly stopped play prior to the sending off, and the atmosphere soured.

Another stray arm from Cesar opened up a head wound on substitute Artem Kravets, leading to an extra two minutes of added time. But Slovenia were undone as they committed defenders forward, and it was a mistake from their best performer on the night, Kampl, that led to Yarmolenko's equaliser.

The Slovenia attacker slipped when collecting a clearance as the last man, allowing Kravets to break clear with two team-mates in tow.

The second-half substitute kept his composure to draw out Handanovic before passing to an unmarked Yarmolenko, who swept into the net to cap off the perfect night for Mikhail Fomenko's side.

Denmark 2-2 Sweden (3-4 on agg): Zlatan Ibrahimovic seals Euro 2016 spot

A goal in either half from Zlatan Ibrahimovic was enough for Sweden as they booked their place at Euro 2016 courtesy of a thrilling 2-2 draw, and 4-3 aggregate play-off victory, over Denmark in Copenhagen.

Having settled Saturday's first-leg in Stockholm, Ibrahimovic proved to be the difference yet again as his 19th-minute opener and sumptuous 76th-minute free-kick sealed Sweden's passage to next summer's tournament at the expense of their Scandinavian rivals.

Two late goals from Yussuf Poulsen (81) and substitute Jannik Vestergaard (90) ensured the Danes avoided defeat on the night, but they came too late to save their qualification bid or the career of manager Morten Olsen, who leaves his post after 15 years at the helm.

The result sees Sweden reach a fifth consecutive European championships and also sees them join Hungary, Republic of Ireland and Ukraine in December's Euro 2016 draw having progressing via the play-offs.

The introduction of Pierre Hojbjerg, Yussuf Poulsen and Nicolai Jorgensen from the substitutes bench hauled Denmark back into Saturday's first leg, and Olsen decided to start the trio at Parken Stadium.

His changes had the desired effect, with the hosts flying out of the traps in a pulsating opening period. With just eight minutes on the clock they almost levelled the tie, but Poulsen's flick on from Christian Eriksen's corner was diverted onto the bar by Kim Kallstrom.

For all their bright play though, Denmark failed to create anything clear cut, and shortly before the 20-minute mark they were punished as the unmarked Ibrahimovic coaxed Kallstrom's corner beyond an unsighted Kasper Schmeichel in the Danish goal.

It was almost two on 27 minutes, buoyed by the opener, the Swedes worked a great move to play Ibrahimovic through on goal, but this time Schmeichel was on hand to put in a decisive block.

The closest Denmark came to an equaliser came on the half-hour mark when an Eriksen free-kick drew Andreas Isaksson into a rudimentary save, while Schmeichel was on hand to deny Ibrahimovic's looping header six minutes later.



Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger then almost had a moment to forget as he sliced Ibrahimovic's cross onto the roof of his own net before former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner spurned a great opportunity two minutes before the interval, miscuing a header.

Needing two goals, half-time gave Denmark time to calculate their approach to salvaging their Euro 2016 hopes. But their first chance of a response came courtesy of Erik Johansson, who sliced Jorgensen's cross agonisingly wide of his own goal on 52 minutes.

Eriksen's driven effort 20 minutes later somehow missed the back of the net as Sebastian Larsson and Isaksson combined to keep the hosts out. And within six minutes, Sweden had doubled their advantage.



After Agger had unnecessarily barged Emil Forsberg to ground, Ibrahimovic curled a stunning free-kick around the wall and beyond the reach of Schmeichel for his 62nd international goal.

Denmark reduced the arrears nine minutes from time, with Poulsen meeting Riza Durmisi's deep cross to head past Isaksson.

However, by the time Vestergaard had levelled the tie on the night, the hosts had just stoppage time to find two goals, a feat which proved unachievable.

Morten Olsen: Veteran Denmark boss leaves job after 15 years

Denmark coach Morten Olsen has stepped down after 15 years in charge following his side's Euro 2016 play-off exit against Sweden.
Olsen, 66, announced in March he would leave when his contract expired at the end of the campaign.
Following the 4-3 aggregate loss, he confirmed he would leave immediately.
"I have told the players that the Danish FA and I have agreed I stop," said Olsen. "In recent months, we have been too unstable in our performances."
Olsen, who won 102 caps for Denmark as a player between 1970 and 1989, took charge after Euro 2000.
He has taken the Danes to four major finals, qualifying for the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, and the European Championships in 2004 and 2012.
But they failed to reach next summer's finals in France, losing in the play-off after finishing third in their qualifying group behind Portugal and Albania.
"It hurts to end this way after more than 35 years as a player and coach but I feel most sorry for the Danes, for the fans, " Olsen added. "I feel empty with regards to the match."
The Danish Football Association (DBU) said it hoped to appoint a new coach before the end of the year.
"I have great respect for Morten and his results. It is important for both Morten and I that the end of his phenomenal career in Danish football is done in a dignified and orderly manner," added DBU president Jesper Moller.
