Pep Guardiola reveals how long Benjamin Mendy is set to be out forBenjamin Mendy will travel to Barcelona to see renowned surgeon Ramon Cugat on Wednesday
Benjamin Mendy is facing months on the sidelines after suffering suspected knee ligament damage. Pep Guardiola is so concerned about the French international’s injury that he will consider buying another left back in January. Mendy is set to travel to Barcelona to see renowned surgeon Ramon Cugat on Wednesday when it is feared tests will confirm serious ligament damage. Mendy - a £49m summer signing - suffered the injury when tackling Andros Townsend in Manchester City's 5-0 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
He tried to play on - but was substituted shortly after.
The 23-year-old has been left needing to walk with the aid of crutches since.
Guardiola compared to injury to Ilkay Gundogan’s ligament damage that ruled the German international out for nine months.
And he confirmed that he expects Mendy to be out for several months too.
He said: “Tomorrow he’s travelling to Barcelona and we will see finally what he has. “Our first impression is that it will it be a little long, longer than we expected. “It is very frustrating for him first as a person.
“Like with Gundogan last year I feel sorry for him. We would miss him a lot, it would be a major setback.” Asked if City will need to buy a replacement in January, Guardiola added: “We will see. We thought about next summer about looking for another left-back.
“We have Danilo, (Fabian) Delph and (Oleks) Zinchenko who can play there so we will see as we go along.”
