Arsene Wenger, “I hope we can compete for the title this year and I am convinced we will”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his young squad is on the right track to be able to aim for silverware next season.
Speaking to the club’s official magazine, the Frenchman said how last season showed how the Gunners are improving and can aim for silverware next season although starting well – hence beating Liverpool away from home in mid-August – is mighty important as it would mean putting themselves in a good position from an early stage.
Wenger also said how there will always be people who think Arsenal are not competitive enough during the summer, adding how the objective of his squad is to work hard during pre-season and make sure to be competitive when the important competitions get underway.
The manager concluded by saying how he is convinced Arsenal can compete for the title thanks to a young and aggressive group always ready to improve.
He said:
The aim is to continue to progress as we have been doing.
We were very close last year – closer than the previous season – so we are heading in the right way. We hope we can continue that this season.
It is important to start well, start strongly and get into a good position early on and to try to maintain the level. We have a good young group who are very aggressive and want to improve.
I think people will always say we can’t compete – it is not the first time, but we have to do what we always do which is work hard and play our own game, then we can compete.
I hope we can compete for the title this year and I am convinced we will.
