Wenger: Arsenal don't need another defender
Arsene Wenger has strongly hinted he will not buy a defender in the January transfer market because his back four have not let in a single league goal in 2011 so far.
Arsenal are the only team not to have conceded in the Premier League this year and so reports the club could splash out on Bolton’s Gary Cahill, West Ham's Matthew Upson or even Tottenham's Jonathan Woodgate look wide of the mark.
Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny have proved a strong partnership in recent weeks and the Gunners also have Sebastien Squillaci back from injury next weekend and Thomas Vermaelen starting his recovery.
Wenger said: "Our defensive record has been good of late. Our fit centre-halves have done well and will hopefully get through this period without problems.
"If needed I can put Alex Song in there and there is also Ignasi Miquel who has been in a couple of squads recently.
"So transfer-wise I am happy with what I’ve got and I don’t want to harm the progress of our current defenders. We have top quality in that department.
"People always say you must buy, but the players here must have a chance to play if they are to establish themselves."
