Deadline business still to do

The summer transfer window closes on Monday and so clubs will be trying to complete their final incomings and outgoings before the deadline. But what do the Premier League sides need to do? Here are just some of the possibilities…

ARSENAL
With fears over Olivier Giroud’s ankle injury, a striker has become even more of a priority than before for manager Arsene Wenger and Queens Park Rangers’ Loic Remy continues to be linked to Emirates Stadium along with Paris Saint-Germain’s Edison Cavani. Meanwhile, fans would probably like to see a holding midfielder and Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira or Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin are always mentioned. At the same time, it appears Wenger is prepared to let Lukas Podolski leave for the right offer.

ASTON VILLA
Boss Paul Lambert has brought in the likes of Carlos Sanchez, Joe Cole, Philippe Senderos and Aly Cissokho this summer but the Scot has confirmed he is still looking at further options. Local media have suggested an attacking midfielder and winger are top of the wish list at Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur’s out-of-favour Lewis Holtby and Manchester City flop Scott Sinclair have been suggested as targets. Werder Bremen midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic is another who is being linked with Villa Park.

BURNLEY
Last season’s Championship runners-up have had a frustrating time in the summer market, with manager Sean Dyche admitting as much in the face of high prices. With Henri Lansbury having signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest, Wigan Athletic’s James McArthur was understood to be a target at Turf Moor but he now looks to be heading for Leicester City. Watford star Lewis McGugan has also been reported as player who Dyche would like to sign.

CHELSEA
Chelsea were the pre-season bookmakers’ favourites for the Premier League title for a reason after setting about their summer transfers early and impressively. It is therefore more likely to be outgoings at Stamford Bridge before the deadline, particularly with foreign player quotas in mind. Petr Cech, reported AC Milan target Fernando Torres, John Obi Mikel and Marco van Ginkel are all potential departures as a result.

CRYSTAL PALACE
The appointment of Neil Warnock as manager at Selhurst Park makes it difficult to know for certain what could happen in the closing days of the window but he is likely to want to bring in a couple of his own signings. Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish had previously joked regarding transfers: "I may have to start picking the players who come to the club. I need a manager because they will know which players he wants.” But, according to reports in Italy, unsettled Inter Milan midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic had already been attracting Palace’s interest while Sochaux striker Cedric Bakambu claimed to be a target.

EVERTON
Samuel Eto’o has signed at Goodison Park as Everton fortified their striking options before the deadline. But the £28million signing of forward Romelu Lukaku earlier in the summer window means funds are not in wide supply on the blue half of Merseyside. Roberto Martinez, though, has also been linked with a move, possibly on loan, for Manchester United’s England international, Danny Welbeck, who is being linked with a host of clubs.

HULL CITY
Michael Dawson has joined last season’s FA Cup finalists as Steve Bruce aims to strengthen his defence and the former Tottenham Hotspur man will slot in at centre-back. With Shane Long gone, Hull could also be expected to bring in a striker. But with an attempt to sign Jordan Rhodes from Blackburn Rovers now “dead and buried”, according to Bruce, Hull’s attention may have to go elsewhere. Welbeck could be that other target after Bruce worked with the forward at Sunderland.

LEICESTER CITY
It has been a long pursuit of experienced former Inter Milan midfielder Esteban Cambiasso but Leicester appear to be set to get their man and the UEFA Champions League winner would arrive as a free transfer. Elsewhere, Nigel Pearson seems set to get his man in Wigan’s McArthur while strikers Majeed Waris and Hugo Almeida are also said to be on the radar. Keeping hold of Wales international midfielder Andy King will also be an issue for Leicester.

LIVERPOOL
After spending big already this summer on nine new signings, it is unlikely Brendan Rodgers will do too much more incoming business – although a back-up goalkeeper would not go amiss. Instead, it is outgoings which are expected from Anfield. Fabio Borini is wanted by Sunderland while either Daniel Agger or Sebastian Coates could leave, possibly on loan. Young left-back Jack Robinson may also leave and has been linked with a £1m switch to QPR.

MANCHESTER CITY
Similarly to Chelsea and Liverpool, it is most likely going to be outgoings for Manchester City in the closing days of the window as they consider Financial Fair Play. Manager Manuel Pellegrini said earlier in August that he was happy with his squad but did not rule out anything until the window is shut. City were to make any more signings, they would probably need to move on some of John Guidetti, Micah Richards or Sinclair.

MANCHESTER UNITED
A British record-breaking piece of business for Angel di Maria is not expected to be Manchester United’s only activity before the window shuts. Welbeck could leave, either permanently or on loan, while the list of possible arrivals is lengthy. The Arturo Vidal saga seems never ending, while boss Louis van Gaal’s former Dutch national team colleague, Daley Blind, could be a handy left-sided defensive reinforcement. Shock reports of a move for Joe Allen from bitter rivals Liverpool have caused a stir but centre-back Mats Hummels and Khedira are long-term rumours.

NEWCASTLE UNITED
Without a goal in the Premier League so far this season, it is not tricky to predict Newcastle might be looking at players who specialise in putting the ball in the back of the net. Alan Pardew’s squad are missing Remy from last season and a return from QPR is unlikely. But Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette does not fancy leaving France to mean Newcastle have even been linked with Cardiff City misfit Andreas Cornelius while they are one of several clubs rumoured to be in the hunt for Welbeck.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS
After an underwhelming start to the season, it would not be a shock if Harry Redknapp was busy before deadline day and the QPR boss has been linked with plenty of targets to improve his leggy squad. Liverpool’s Robinson and Leicester’s King are two who have already been mentioned but Marseille’s Ghana international midfielder Andre Ayew is another. With Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy also said to be on Redknapp’s shopping list along with a loan move for Manchester United’s Wilfried Zaha to name just a couple more, Loftus Road could be the place to be on deadline day. Clearing out some of the likes of Adel Taarabt may also be an option.

SOUTHAMPTON
After seeing their squad plundered at the beginning of the summer, Southampton have not suffered as badly as some had, prematurely, predicted. However, boss Ronald Koeman seems understandably keen to add some strength to his squad and has been pursuing the pace of Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend’s. Jordy Clasie, who Koeman knows as captain from Feyenoord, and Belgium Atletico Madrid centre-back Toby Alderweireld are reported as other targets. But perhaps the most complex decision remaining for Southampton is whether or not to keep Schneiderlin. Jack Cork is unlikely to be going anywhere, despite reports of a move to Palace.

STOKE CITY
“I do not anticipate going into the market for anything but, you never know, something might present itself, although I would be surprised if it did," Stoke boss Mark Hughes has said. The Britannia Stadium club have been measured in their business and not paying any big transfer fees and it seems like it might just be an outgoing or two before the deadline. Wilson Palacios has been rumoured as one potential departure and Geoff Cameron has been linked with Sunderland and Southampton.

SUNDERLAND
Stadium of Light boss Gus Poyet has made no secret of the fact he wants to re-sign Fabio Borini on a permanent basis after the forward’s successful loan last season. A deal has proved difficult, though, which has left Sunderland frustrated. Welbeck, again, has been linked with a move after he also impressed on loan in the North East in the past. Former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou is another option. Meanwhile, Poyet claims to have two unnamed potential loan signings on offer. It is expected there will be at least a couple of arrivals, plus Modibo Diakite, Danny Graham and Cabral could leave before Monday.

SWANSEA CITY
Keeping hold of Wilfried Bony will be Swansea’s main aim before the window closes. Interest in the striker appears to have gone quiet but nothing can be ruled out prior to a transfer deadline. Ostersunds FK striker Modou Barrow is poised to move to Wales and that deal should be completed soon while Swansea are another club from whom Sochaux forward Cedric Bakambu claims to have received an offer. A move for Montpellier defensive midfielder Benjamin Stambouli is another one to keep an eye on.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Having moved on Dawson, Holtby could be the next departure from White Hart Lane as boss Mauricio Pochettino aims to make some late tweaks to his inherited squad. A loan departure for Roberto Soldado, who has been linked with AC Milan in their search for a replacement for Mario Balotelli, can also not be ruled out. As potential incomings, Sevilla claim Tottenham want centre-back Federico Fazio as a replacement for Dawson while the tug of war over Pochettino’s former Southampton colleague, Schneiderlin, seems to continue.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION
Following the arrival of Porto winger Silvestre Varela on loan, it is reported West Brom are eyeing just one more piece of business. This could be a striker in another potential loan but Hawthorns boss Alan Irvine is repeatedly linked among the host of managers chasing Leicester’s King. One more arrival seems likely.

WEST HAM UNITED
Norwich City winger Nathan Redmond has been mentioned as a possible arrival to add competition for places in wide areas and a reliable centre-back partner for Winston Reid could be another possible region of interest. Modibo Maiga has already been shipped out on loan to Metz and some fans are muttering they would also like to see Ravel Morrison moved on before the transfer window closes.

Over £750 million has been spent already in this record-breaking transfer window.

And as it stands, #MUFC are the biggest spenders so far, & are poised to add to that total with the signing of Blind.
