Samuel Eto'o: Sampdoria contact Everton over Cameroon striker



Samuel Eto'o could leave Everton after he was left out of the team against West Ham in the FA Cup - amid interest from clubs including Sampdoria.

The Italian club have contacted Everton about the Cameroon striker, who only joined the club from Chelsea in August on a two-year deal.

Eto'o, 33, has scored three goals in 14 league appearances this season.

"A couple of clubs contacted us in the last 12 hours so I decided to leave him out," manager Roberto Martinez said.

He added: "We will see what is best for him and us over the next few days."

Eto'o would become the second striker to depart Goodison Park this month, after Hallam Hope moved to Bury for an undisclosed fee.

The veteran striker has previously played for Real Mallorca, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Anzhi Makhachkala during a nomadic career.

A return Italy is looking more and more likely for Samuel Eto'o.

The Everton striker has during the past few hours rejected an offer of ? 5 million over two seasons from the Brazilian outfit Santos because he only wants Sampdoria.

The parties continue to speak over the phone and seem to be getting closer and closer by the minute as the Serie A prepares to welcome the Cameroonian striker back.

Serie A: Sampdoria are close to signing Everton striker Samuel Eto'o

Sampdoria are closing in on the signing of Everton striker Samuel Eto'o, according to reports in Italy.

The Genoa outfit, which sold top scorer Manolo Gabbiadini to Napoli earlier this month, are desperately looking to reinforce their attacking line after negotiations aimed at signing Udinese forward Luis Muriel collapsed on Thursday.

Samp met with Eto'o's representative Claudio Vigorelli on Thursday morning and according to Italian TV station Mediaset, the Cameroon forward has agreed to join the club on a 18-month contract while he has reduced his wages by 40 percent in order to return to Serie A.

The 33-year-old only joined Everton five months ago from Chelsea.

Eto'o has scored three goals in 14 league appearances this season and is under contract with the Toffees until June 2016.

The former Chelsea and Barcelona forward was an unused substitute in Everton's 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Saturday and was left out of the squad for the FA Cup third-round replay at West Ham on Tuesday.

Eto'o spent two seasons at Inter and was a member of the Nerazurri's 2010 treble-winning side that won the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and Champions League under coach Jose Mourinho.

Transfer news: Everton's Samuel Eto'o reportedly agrees terms with Sampdoria

Everton striker Samuel Eto’o has reportedly agreed terms over a move to Serie A side Sampdoria.


The Cameroonian moved to Everton less than five months ago following the expiry of his contract with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

But Sky Italia are reporting that Eto’o has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract with Genoa-based Sampdoria in a deal which would see him earn in the region of £1.15m per season.

They also claim that the 33-year-old would also have the option of joining Sampdoria’s coaching staff when his playing contract expires.

Sampdoria are enjoying a fine year domestically and sit fifth in Serie A as they try and ensure qualification to play European football next season.

Eto’o has made 20 appearances in all competitions for Everton this season, scoring four goals.

The Merseyside club are yet to comment on the speculation linking Eto’o with a move away from Goodison Park.

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero said he is awaiting approval from Everton to complete the signing of Samuel Eto'o.

Sky Italia colleagues have reported that the Cameroon striker has agreed personal terms, and that the two clubs have ageed a fee.

And speaking after his side’s 2-0 win over Parma, Ferrero said a deal is close.

"We're waiting on the okay from Everton,” he told Rai Sport. “I've met the lad, he's a champion."

Eto’o moved to Everton less than five months ago after his contract expired with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

Roberto Martinez said last week the 33-year-old could leave Goodison Park after revealing that two clubs had shown an interest in him.

The Everton boss, who left the striker out of the FA Cup reply defeat to West Ham, said the player's future at the club was under discussion.

"With Samuel, we have a really good relationship and we are looking at his situation," Martinez said.

"We had a couple of clubs contact us in the last 12 hours so I decided it was better now to leave him out of the squad and allow us a different focus in the group."

He began his career at Real Madrid but made his name at their arch-rivals Barcelona.

Eto'o moved to Inter Milan in 2009 as part of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's switch to Barcelona and went on to win the Champions League again in his first season under Mourinho at the San Siro.

Transfer news: Sampdoria optimistic over deal to sign Everton's Samuel Eto'o

Sampdoria are confident striker Samuel Eto'o will join them before the transfer window closes, despite the Cameroon international yet to come to an agreement with Everton to leave Goodison Park.

The 33-year-old, who joined the Merseysiders just five months ago after being released by Chelsea, has reportedly agreed an 18-month deal with the Serie A outfit and is willing to reduce his wages by 40 per cent in order to return to Italy and join Champions League-chasing Sampdoria.

However, the former Barcelona star remains contracted with Everton until June 2016 and the Toffees want to find a replacement for him before any deal is concluded, according to Samp sporting director Carlo Osti.

Osti told Sky Italia: "Our agreement with Eto'o has almost been finalised.

"He wants to join Sampdoria, those are his intentions.

"He is currently negotiating with Everton to resolve his contract with them.

"Everton are looking for a replacement. It might take a day more than expected, but we are moderately optimistic on Eto'o and hope he can arrive as soon as possible.

"I think Eto'o is a player of great character who can only help this group of mature players grow even more."

Eto'o spent two seasons at Inter Milan and was a member of the 2010 treble-winning side that won the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and Champions League under Jose Mourinho.

Samp, coached by Sinisa Mihajlovic, are fourth in Serie A, level on 33 points with third-placed Napoli at the halfway stage of the season.

Transfer news: New York Cosmos join Sampdoria in race to sign Everton striker Samuel Eto'o

Sampdoria’s plans to sign Samuel Eto’o from Everton could be complicated by late interest from New York Cosmos, according to Sky sources.

The Italian club’s sporting director Carlo Osti said on Wednesday that an agreement with Eto’o had almost been finalised and that the 33-year-old wants to join Sampdoria.

Everton are yet to respond, and they are prepared to take their time and decide what is best for the club and the player.

For Sampdoria there is now an added complication that New York Cosmos, who play in the North American Soccer League, have shown interest in signing the former Inter Milan striker.

Eto’o, who has not travelled with the Everton squad to Qatar for warm weather training, moved to Merseyside from Chelsea in the summer and has netted four goals in 20 appearances.

Sky Italia previously reported that he would sign a two-and-a-half year contract with Genoa-based Sampdoria after agreeing to a 40 per cent drop in wages.

It looks as though Samuel Eto'o will soon be a Sampdoria player, with Sky Italia reporting the Everton striker is having a medical with the Serie A side this morning.

It is thought he will sign a two-and-a-half year deal with Sampdoria and will then be able to take on the role of a director at the end of his contract.

ETO'O SURPRISE

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has hinted there will be a big surprise for the club's supporters on Sunday morning in the shape of Samuel Eto'o. Sky sources understand the striker is in Italy for a medical but no deal is in place yet.
However, it is thought the deal is moving in right direction.

Ferrero told Sky Italia: "On Sunday families must wake up, have a walk and going to the stadium because there will be a big surprise: Eto'o."
