Manchester United have completed the signing of Memphis Depay

Manchester United have announced that Memphis Depay has completed his transfer from PSV Eindhoven.

The Netherlands international joins United on a four-year contract with the option to extend for a further year and becomes the club’s first signing of the summer.

Depay described the move as 'a dream' and revealed he cannot wait to work with compatriot Louis van Gaal once again.

“This is a dream come true for me; to play for the biggest club in the world and also to have the chance to work with someone who I believe is the best manager in the world, Louis van Gaal,” Depay said.

“I have great belief in my ability and I work hard to strive to achieve my dreams. I have been at PSV Eindhoven since I was 12 years old and I would like to thank them for everything.

“It was a great moment when we won the league and I was so happy to be part of that. This is now a new chapter in my life and one that I am looking forward to.”

Van Gaal cited Depay’s versatility as a strength and backed the 21-year-old to become an Old Trafford great.

“I know Memphis well from our time working together in the Netherlands national team,” he said. “He is a young versatile player who has the ability to play in a number of different positions.

"It will take time for Memphis to get used to the rhythm of the Premier League but I have no doubt that he has the potential to become a great footballer for this club and he is at the right club to continue the good work he has done so far.”

Depay made 124 senior appearances and scored 50 times for PSV Eindhoven after coming through the club's youth system, making his first-team debut in September 2011.

He was the Eredivisie's top scorer this season with 22 goals in 30 games and was one of three players shortlisted for the Young Player Award at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Manchester United make Memphis Depay enquiry, PSV confirm



Manchester United have made an enquiry over the availability of the PSV forward Memphis Depay, the Dutch club has revealed.

Depay is the Eredivisie’s leading goalscorer and scored in the 4-1 win over Heerenveen on Saturday as Phillip Cocu’s men sealed the league title for the first time in seven seasons.

Liverpool and Tottenham have been linked with the 21-year-old, but PSV technical director Marcel Brands has revealed United have made an intitial approach.

"We have had a telephone call from them about him," Brands said on Dutch television.

"But no talks have been held yet. There are several top clubs who have expressed an interest."

Brands added Depay, who has scored 20 league goals this season, would cost more than the £14.5m Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur reportedly bid for the striker.

"It will be much higher than the offer from Tottenham Hotspur," Brands added. "He will be very expensive."          

Cocu said he expects Depay, who played in last year's World Cup in Brazil, to leave in the summer, along with fellow Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.            

"The chance is really good that they'll both go," Cocu said. "But I do hope we'll be able to keep the rest of the team. A few mutations are not so bad but there must not be too many."

Manchester United 'inform' PSV of Memphis Depay interest

PSV Eindhoven have revealed Manchester United have officially informed them of their interest in signing Memphis Depay.

But sporting director Marcel Brands says Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are a step ahead in the race to sign the 21-year-old Dutch winger.

Depay is set to leave PSV this summer after scoring 21 goals for the Dutch side this season.

He was included in Louis van Gaal's Netherlands squad for last summer's World Cup.

But Brands insists the United manager faces a fight to get his man - although he did reveal Van Gaal is not facing competition from Bayern Munich.

Brands told Fox Sports: "PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest.

"The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks but Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him.

"It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that.

"There isn’t usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season. It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis.

“That only illustrates that he’s on the right track."
