Everton are close to agreeing a £6m deal with River Plate to sign centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori according to Sky sources.

It is understood the 24-year-old is due on Merseyside later on Friday following a flight from South America, and he will undergo a medical on Saturday.

Sky Sports reported on Thursday that the Toffees were interested in Mori and Inter Milan's captain Andrea Rinocchia as they look to strengthen their back four following the departures of Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz.

Everton have already landed Barnsley youngster Mason Holgate in a deal understood to be worth £2m.

Chelsea are also interested in their centre-back John Stones and have had three bids of £20m, £25m and most recently £30m all flatly rejected by the hierarchy at Goodison Park.

The Sun newspaper reported on Friday that Stones, and England international, could hand in a transfer request but Roberto Martinez has confirmed that he is not aware of such an action being taken by the player.

Mori, meanwhile, has one cap for Argentina and has made over 100 appearances in all competitions for River Plate.

As the mainstay of their defence, he was instrumental in their triumphs in the Recopa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores earlier this year.

'MORI DEAL NOT DONE'

As we told you earlier, Ramiro Funes Mori was at Goodison Park ahead of a potential move to Everton.

Roberto Martinez has spoken about the River Plate defender and has revealed that no deal has been completed yet.

He said: “It’s not done. He’s here, we have to meet over the next 24 hours and see if we can conclude a deal with his club."

Everton are closing in on the signing of Uruguayan striker Leandro Rodriguez from River Plate Montevideo, according to Sky sources.

Rodriguez's coach, Juan Ramon Carrasco, was quoted over the weekend saying: "He is gone. (The) Club told me of an offer from Everton. He deserves it."

It is understood that discussions are still taking place, and that something may happen in the coming days.

The 22-year-old has dual Italian nationality and scored nine goals in 23 games for the club last season.

The potential arrival of Rodriguez would come amid a busy week of the transfer window for Everton, with the signing of defender Ramero Funes Mori set to be completed in the next 24 hours in a deal worth £6m.

The club are also interested in signing Brazil international midfielder Bernard from Shakhtar Donetsk.

MORI WORK PERMIT PROBLEMS

Everton are having problems securing a work permit for Ramiro Funes Mori, according to the Daily Mirror.

The centre-back arrived in England late last week after the club agreed a fee with River Plate and personal terms with the player.

But, having failed to secure an EU passport, Everton have lodged an application for an "exceptional talent" work permit, according to the newspaper.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is hopeful of tying up deals to sign Ramiro Funes Mori and Leandro Rodriguez.

The Goodison Park club are close to an agreement for River Plate defender Funes Mori, although they would have to secure a work permit for the once-capped Argentina international.

"At the moment it hasn't been concluded but we are positive about the outcome," said Martinez.

"We have a good relationship with River Plate and we are hopeful we can get Ramiro as an Everton player over the next few hours.

"There has been a bit of a change in the work permit rules and we will take the opportunity to test the new process in place, and we are quite confident we can achieve the points needed."

Martinez is also very keen on River Plate Montevideo striker Rodriguez, who has scored 18 goals in 70 appearances for his Uruguayan side.

"We always keep an eye on young players of potential and Leandro is a very talented young man," he said.

"At the moment there is nothing to announce but he would fit into that outstanding young talent like Mason Holgate and is a player who we would love to see if we could get a positive outcome."

But Martinez would not comment on the future of defender John Stones, appearing frustrated at again having to answer questions about the Chelsea target.
