Liverpool have tabled an offer of £24.5million for Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian attacker Alex Teixeira.

Reds chief executive Ian Ayre missed Wednesday night's FA Cup replay win over Exeter City after flying to Florida to hold negotiations with the Ukrainian club.

Shakhtar are currently at a winter training camp in the States and Teixeira was left out of the squad for their midweek friendly with Corinthians.

Liverpool are willing to pay 32million euros to secure the signing of the 26-year-old. However, Shakhtar insist they value the player at around 50million euros (£38.5million).

The Reds view Teixeira, who has netted 22 times in 15 league games this season, as the perfect solution to their goalscoring woes.

Chelsea have also been heavily linked with a move for Teixeira, who began his career at Vasco da Gama before signing for Shakhtar in 2010.

Profile of Brazilian playmaker who may be on his way to Anfield



Liverpool have submitted a £24.5million bid for Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder Alex Teixeira as Jurgen Klopp looks to add more goals into his blunt offensive line-up.

The Brazilian had been linked to a switch to Stamford Bridge earlier this month, but the Reds are now firm favourites to land the goalscorer's signature.

Strengths: Teixeira is a versatile player who can be used as a striker as well as across the midfield.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the 26-year-old has scored 26 times in 25 games for his side this season, but can also be played in a more withdrawn role.

The uncapped Brazilian is comfortable with both feet and is a strong, pacy dribbler, which could make him a good fit for Klopp's brand of football.

Link to Liverpool: Teixeira had been linked with a move to champions Chelsea earlier in the transfer window, but the Merseyside club have jumped ahead of the champions by submitting a £24.5m bid for the 26-year-old.

The Londoners are said to have switched their attention to Ezequiel Lavezzi and Alexandre Pato, leaving the door open for Klopp's side.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has flown out to Shakhtar's winter training camp in Florida to try and push a deal through.

Although the Reds are keen on signing the in-form forward, sources have claimed the Ukrainian side want at least £38.5m for the star.

European record: Despite netting 19 times in the Ukrainian Premier League this season, Liverpool fans will be more excited about his three goals in an ill-fated Champions League bid.

In a group containing PSG and Real Madrid, the haul can be considered one of Shakhtar's only successes in this season's competition and the 26-year-old's European performances have put him top of the wish-list for many high-quality sides.

Liverpool have made an approach to sign Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian attacker Alex Teixeira as manager Jurgen Klopp attempts to secure his first major signing.
Liverpool are willing to pay about £24.5m for the 26-year-old.
However, the Ukrainian club value Teixeira, who has also been linked with Chelsea, at closer to £39m.
Klopp is looking to boost his striking options with Danny Ings, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge injured.
With £32.5m summer signing from Aston Villa Christian Benteke out of sorts, Liverpool have only scored 25 goals in 22 Premier League games this season.
Shakhtar, who are currently at a winter training camp in Florida, value Teixeira highly. He has scored 22 goals in 15 league games and four goals in 10 Champions League games this season.
He began his career at Vasco da Gama in Brazil before moving to Shakhtar in 2010.
Klopp has brought in defender Steven Caulker on loan from QPR and completed a £5.1m deal for Red Star Belgrade's 19-year-old midfield man Marko Grujic - who has returned to the Serbia club on loan until the summer - but a successful more for Teixeira would represent his first significant move in the market.
If he signs he would be the fourth Brazilian in Liverpool's senior ranks, joining Lucas Leiva, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.

An opening offer of £24.5m has been made by Liverpool, Shakhtar however, value Teixeira at around £38m.

The clubs could compromise at a fee of around £30m, in between the two valuations for the Brazilian attacker who has scored 22 goals in 15 league games this season.

Should a fee be agreed, Teixeira will command wages of around £50,000 a week.

Liverpool are confident a deal will be struck with Shakhtar, and the club are prepared to back Jürgen Klopp in his first transfer window, Klopp has identified Teixeira as his priority signing this January.
