Newcastle United are set for a busy transfer window and want TWO strikers before Monday's deadline



Newcastle United will strike a deal for Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia in the next 48 hours – and then try again for Saido Berahino in the summer.

United’s best efforts to land the West Brom striker have come to nothing after Jeremy Peace decided to keep the striker at the Hawthorns and United will move to sign Doumbia on a loan deal until the end of the season.

It is understood the deal will be pursued EVEN IF Berahino does make a club record switch to St James’ Park.

Doumbia – pacey, skilful and with experience in the Champions League – is not the first choice of the club’s transfer committee but they believe he offers a decent back-up option.

Newcastle want TWO strikers and may also move for Bafetimbi Gomis, the Swansea forward.

They are unlikely to give up on Berahino, though. The striker was keen on a move to Tyneside and if they stay up, another attempt will be made in the summer to take him to the North East.

United are braced for a frantic final two days in the window. They also want a left-back, but Guilherme Siqueira – the Atletico Madrid left-back – will join Valencia.

Valencia’s Lucas Orban may come back into play while the club have also made tentative enquiries about Davide Santon, who left 12 months ago.

Florian Thauvin will complete a loan move back to Marseille in a deal that will see United get the forward off their wage bill and the player himself take a sizeable pay-cut to end his St James’ Park misery.

The Roma striker, who has spent the first six-months of this season out on loan at CSKA Moscow, will join the Premier League club on an initial loan-deal once again with a view to a permanent move in the summer.

AS Roma striker Seydou Doumbia is set to undergo a medical at Newcastle ahead of a loan deal for the rest of the season.

But a move for Atletico Madrid left-back Guilherme Siqueira has broken down, according to Sky sources.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren is keen to boost his squad before the transfer window closes on Monday evening and is also looking to add another striker and a left-back in addition to Doumbia.

The Magpies are focusing their efforts on strengthening their attack on three forwards - Doumbia, Swansea's Bafetimbi Gomis and West Brom's Saido Berahino.

Newcastle have struggled to score goals this season and their total of 25 from 23 games is the sixth-worst in the Premier League.

Georginio Wijnaldum has scored nine league goals from midfield but strikers Aleksandar Mitrovic and Papiss Cisse - who is sidelined with a groin injury - have managed just four and two respectively.

Doumbia is a 28-year-old Ivory Coast international who joined Roma in January 2015 after twice finishing as the top scorer in the Russian Premier League for CSKA Moscow.

However, the striker did not settle in Italy and has spent the last few months back on loan at CSKA Moscow, where he has scored five goals in 13 league games, while also netting three times in the Champions League.

Gomis has fallen out of favour at Swansea after a red-hot start to the season in which he scored four goals in their opening four games.

The 30-year-old has scored just once in Swansea's 19 league games since and has started just three of their last 11 and none of their past four. The arrival of Alberto Paloschi from Chievo is likely to push him further down the pecking order.
