Aitor Karanka says Middlesbrough have agreed a loan deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Jese Rodriguez and he is now trying to convince the forward to move to the Riverside.

The Boro boss worked with the 23-year-old at Real Madrid when he was assistant to Jose Mourinho and is keen on a reunion with his fellow Spaniard, who left the European champions in the summer to join PSG.

Jese has failed to settle in Paris and has made just nine Ligue 1 appearances so far this season following his big-money move in the summer.

When asked how strong the interest in the player was, Karanka said: "Massive. He's a player I have known for the last seven or eight years. I know his potential. I know his character.

"PSG paid ?25m for him. He can bring us a lot of things so we are trying to convince him."

Karanka said he was trying to persuade Jese to make the move and believes it would be a "very big" signing for the club if they could pull it off.

Yes, for him it's a really important move," he said. "The last five or six months have been difficult for him. He couldn't settle in the way he wanted. He knows this step is really important so he has to be sure. I am trying to convince him.

"He was playing for Real Madrid last season. He's a Champions League player, a young player with an amazing future in front of him."

Middlesbrough have missed out on Paris Saint-Germain forward Jese Rodriguez after he chose to go back to Spain to play for his old club Las Palmas for less money, according to the club's president Miguel Ramirez.

Middlesbrough have missed out on Paris Saint-Germain forward Jese Rodriguez after he chose to go back to Spain to play for his old club Las Palmas for less money, according to the club's president Miguel Ramirez.
Middlesbrough agreed terms with the French champions last week but the player did not want to play in England, insisting that he be allowed to go back to La Liga and play for his hometown side.
The Gran Canaria club wanted the former Real Madrid striker but only if PSG continued paying around three-quarters of his wages until the end of the season.
This was at first unacceptable to PSG and appeared to put Boro in the driving seat but Jese dug his heels in and in the end the Ligue 1 side agreed to let him join Las Palmas until the end of the season, with the player taking a pay cut.

Ramirez said: 'He comes to us losing a lot of money but he has preferred to have things this way so he can play for us.
'We are now at the limit of our budget. Our objective was to bring Jese and it has been possible. The operation is almost completely finalised. There is complete agreement.'
The player is now due to be presented to Las Palmas supporters on Tuesday. The club face Valencia on Monday night and still have an outside chance of making the European places this season.


PSG hope that back in Spain Jese will start showing the form that made them sign him last summer for £17.9million.
That will then open the door to selling him at the end of the season after he failed to adapt to life in France.
Boro were hopeful that manager Aitor Karanka's links with Jese would see him pick Teeside ahead of Gran Canaria.
But despite knowing Karanka from both the Spain Under 16s and Real Madrid, the pull to go home was too strong.

LAS PALMAS BEAT BORO TO JESE

Here's confirmation that Middlesbrough's pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain forward Jese Rodriguez have been fruitless.

The 23-year-old former Real Madrid star has returned to his hometown club Las Palmas on loan until the end of the season.
