Chelsea are interested in signing Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater, according to Sky sources.

The England international is one of the midfielders the Premier League champions are looking at as a possible replacement for Nemanja Matic, who has been sold to Manchester United for £40m.

Chelsea have already bought Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, but Blues manager Antonio Conte wants to sign another midfielder.

The Italian has already asked Bayern Munich about signing Renato Sanches and Drinkwater is also on his list of targets.

However, Leicester are under no pressure to sell Drinkwater and he is not for sale, having signed a new four-year contract last summer.

The 27-year-old was an integral part of the Leicester team that won the title in 2015-16 and his performances earned him a call-up to the England squad in March 2016.

N'Golo Kante, who partnered Drinkwater in that title-winning Leicester midfield, joined Chelsea last summer for £30m and has enjoyed great success at Stamford Bridge.

The Frenchman was a member of the Premier League-winning team for the second season in a row and won the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards.

Drinkwater aside, Chelsea's other midfield targets include Everton's Ross Barkley and Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Danny Drinkwater is ready to tell Leicester he wants to move to Chelsea.

The Champions are seriously interested in the 27-year-old midfielder and want to sign him this summer.

Mirror Football understands Chelsea were keen to take Drinkwater from the Foxes last summer as well as N’golo Kante in an audacious move.

But Leicester were unwilling to sanction the double swoop - which would have meant losing both key players from their title-winning midfield - and Chelsea did not want to jeopardise their move for Kante.

The Blues, however, now want to sign him this time around with Antonio Conte impressed by his work rate and his game intelligence.

Drinkwater, missing from Friday night’s friendly against Borussia Moenchengladbach, is keen on the move and is ready to leave the King Power Stadium.

Danny Drinkwater has been left in the dark over his future with Chelsea yet to follow up a £15 million bid that Leicester City rejected earlier this summer.

Telegraph Sport can reveal that Chelsea failed with an offer of just £15m for Drinkwater some weeks ago and the Premier League champions are yet to make a second bid. Leicester do not want to sell Drinkwater and believed the £15m bid was well below what the 27-year-old is worth in today’s market.

t is understood Drinkwater would be interested in a switch to Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea have been considering a move for a number of midfield targets.

The Blues have a strong interest in Tottenham Hotspur target Ross Barkley and are also monitoring Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Both players have just 12 months remaining on their contracts.

Other than looking at English options, head coach Antonio Conte is believed to have put a number of foreign midfield targets to the Chelsea board – one of whom is Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto. Reports in Spain claim that Roberto, who can play in midfield or at wing-back, has offers from both Chelsea and Manchester United. The 25-year-old’s Barca release clause is set at £36m, although there have also been claims that Roberto would prefer to stay in Spain.

Chelsea will make a second bid for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater in the coming week as they attempt to make at least three new signings before the transfer window shuts.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, Leicester have already rejected one offer from Chelsea of around £15 million for Drinkwater this summer. Drinkwater has been left in the dark over his future, but Chelsea are preparing a second offer that is likely to be worth over £25m for the 27-year-old.

It is understood that Drinkwater is interested in a move to Chelsea, even though he may find himself behind N’Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas in head coach Antonio Conte’s pecking order. But Leicester could put up a fight for Drinkwater and demand the £40m Chelsea received from Manchester United for Nemanja Matic.

The departure of Matic has left Conte short of options in the middle of the park as he plots how to combine Chelsea’s Premier League title defence with a return to the Champions League.

Chelsea considered trying to sign Drinkwater along with Kante last summer and have retained an interest ever since.

Other than giving Conte more midfield options, Drinkwater would boost Chelsea’s home-grown quota, which has been reduced by the departures of John Terry, Asmir Begovic and several youngsters. Chelsea have considered a number of home-grown options over the past few weeks, with Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also targeted.

A second bid for Drinkwater does not necessarily mean that Chelsea will not also try to add Barkley, who Tottenham are leading the chase for, or Oxlade-Chamberlain to their squad before the transfer window shuts. Conte has made no secret of the fact he thinks the Chelsea squad is currently too thin to cope with the demands of the Premier League and Champions League.
