James Collins and Patrice Evra to leave West Ham

West Ham have confirmed that James Collins and Patrice Evra are to leave the club when their contracts expire on June 30.

Centre-back Collins, who will be 35 in August, made 214 appearances for the Hammers across two spells.

He initially joined West Ham from Cardiff in July 2005 and made his debut in a League Cup second-round victory at Sheffield Wednesday two months later.

Collins spent four years with the club before moving to Aston Villa. The former Wales international returned to West Ham in the summer of 2012 and established himself as a regular starter under Sam Allardyce following the club's promotion to the Premier League.

Collins' final appearance saw him wear the captain's armband for the last few minutes of the Hammers' 3-1 Premier League win over Allardyce's Everton on May 13.

Joint-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold said: "We would like to place on record our sincere thanks for the outstanding service James has given West Ham United down the years.

"His bravery and commitment on the pitch were never called into question and he has played his part in establishing the club in the Premier League since his return in 2012.

"We appreciate just how popular James is among our fellow supporters but, with the appointment of a new manager, we felt together that the time was right to go our separate ways.

"It goes without saying that we wish James and his family every success in the future and they will always be welcome at London Stadium."

Former France defender Patrice Evra arrived on a short-term contract in February and played five times for the club. His last appearance was in the 2-0 win at Leicester on May 5.

The former Manchester United defender was sacked by Marseille earlier in the season and banned by UEFA following an altercation with a supporter, but completed a free transfer back to the Premier League.

Manuel Pellegrini targets up to seven West Ham signings as clear-out begins

West Ham United have begun a wholesale clear-out of players and backroom staff under new manager Manuel Pellegrini who plans to significantly overhaul the first-team squad with up to seven new signings this summer.

Pellegrini is bringing in a five-strong backroom staff that has worked him for a number of years including assistant Ruben Cousillas and fitness coach Jose Cabello. The trio worked together at Manchester City and Malaga.

Meanwhile neither Patrice Evra nor James Collins – who has spent 11 years at the club in two spells – will have their contracts renewed while defender Sam Byram is understood to be up for sale. In addition at least two more players are expected to be sold while West Ham will not be signing goalkeeper Joe Hart after his loan spell ended. City will accept less than £5million for the goalkeeper.

Collins, who turns 35 in August, played 214 times for West Ham. Evra, 37, played just five games after being handed a short-term deal by Moyes, and has been released. Byram, 24, has struggled to claim a regular place after joining West Ham from Leeds United and can go.

At the same time, following the departure of David Moyes and his four-strong coaching staff last week, West Ham have also told goalkeeping coach Chris Woods, who survived the sacking of Slaven Bilic, that he is no longer wanted.

Also leaving, with their contracts not being renewed, are head of medical services Gary Lewin, club doctor Ian Beasley and head of fitness Nick Davies. They, along with Woods, have all left the club with immediate effect.

The clear-out follows the appointment earlier this week of Pellegrini who is being paid up to £7million-a-year – including bonuses – which makes him the highest-paid manager in West Ham’s history.

The departure of some backroom staff members – such as Lewin and Beasley – has caused surprise at West Ham with fears that it is a cost-cutting measure. It remains to be seen how they are replaced.

In a statement West Ham said: “Following the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini as manager, a restructuring of the coaching and backroom staff is currently underway, with several new appointments set to be confirmed in due course.”

That will also extend across the first-team squad with West Ham having informed Pellegrini he will have substantial funds to recruit new players. The Chilean, who signed a three-year contract, is targeting a number of players including two who he worked with at Manchester City. Pellegrini would like to sign Yaya Toure, whose contract at City expires next month, and Willy Caballero who is now the number two goalkeeper at Chelsea.
