West Ham hope to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Sébastien Haller after losing out to Valencia in the race to land Maxi Gómez from Celta Vigo.

Manuel Pellegrini desperately needs a striker after allowing Marko Arnautovic to join Shanghai SIPG for £22.4m this week and was hopeful of landing Gómez, only for the Uruguayan to choose Valencia.

West Ham released Andy Carroll and sold Lucas Pérez to Alavés before deciding to cut their losses on Arnautovic, leaving them with Javier Hernández and Jordan Hugill as their only senior forwards. That has placed them under pressure to bring in reinforcements and they were prepared to break their transfer record to sign Gómez for ?50m (£44.5m).

Gómez’s snub came as a major disappointment to Pellegrini, who had targeted the 22-year-old since January, but West Ham have looked to move on quickly and have since stepped up their interest in Haller.

They have held talks with Frankfurt over a potential £40m deal for the highly rated 25-year-old, who has been identified by Manchester United as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku if the Belgian striker moves to Internazionale. Haller’s representatives are waiting to see whether West Ham can agree a fee with the Bundesliga side.

It also remains to be seen whether West Ham can convince Haller to move to the London Stadium. There is a feeling that the former France Under-21 international, who has scored 33 goals in 77 appearances since joining Frankfurt from Utrecht two years ago, could want to see whether he receives offers from clubs who have qualified for next season’s Champions League.

West Ham have signed Pablo Fornals from Villarreal from £24m and brought in two goalkeepers, Roberto and David Martin, on frees.

L’Équipe report that 25-year-old French forward Sébastien Haller is edging closer to a move to Premier League side West Ham United, in a deal orchestrated by Willie McKay.

The Eintracht Frankfurt forward was not initially keen on the move, but the ever-persuasive McKay appears to have changed the former FC Utrecht man’s mind.

The clubs have agreed a ?40m fee, and contractual discussions between Haller and the Hammers will occur this weekend and whilst there is no assurance that they will conclude successfully, English sources are confident. A positive sign for this deal is that Frankfurt appear convinced that this is happening, having already activated agents in recent hours to find a replacement.

West Ham are increasingly confident of signing Sébastien Haller after holding positive talks with Eintracht Frankfurt on Monday.

It is thought that Frankfurt are holding out for £40m for the 25-year-old, who has scored 33 goals in 77 appearances since joining from Utrecht two years ago.

There was a fear that the France Under-21 international was reluctant to move to the London Stadium. However, West Ham believe he now favours a move to the Premier League.

Pellegrini’s only senior strikers are Javier Hernández and Jordan Hugill following the departures of Arnautovic, Andy Carroll and Lucas Pérez. He could seek to sign another forward even if Haller arrives.

Sebastien Haller: West Ham set to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker for up to £45m

Eintracht Frankfurt striker Sebastien Haller is travelling to West Ham for a medical before a transfer worth up to £45m - a club record for the Hammers.

The 25-year-old former France Under-21 international scored 20 goals in 41 games for the German side last season.

If the deal goes through, it would eclipse the £36m fee paid by West Ham for Brazilian Felipe Anderson in 2018.

Haller has scored 33 goals in 77 appearances in two years at Bundesliga club Eintracht.

He joined them from Dutch side Utrecht, where he scored 51 times in 98 games.

Strikers Lucas Perez, Marko Arnautovic and Andy Carroll have all left the Hammers this summer, and earlier on Tuesday manager Manuel Pellegrini said the club are "trying to bring in good players".

Hammers make Haller their record signing

West Ham United is delighted to announce the arrival of prolific French striker Sebastien Haller, the Club’s new record signing.

The highly sought-after forward, who turned 25 in June, joins the Hammers on a five-year deal with an option of a further 12 months for an undisclosed fee from German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

The deal for Haller means the Hammers have broken their transfer record for a third time in a little over a year following the captures of Issa Diop and Felipe Anderson.

A German Cup winner with Eintracht in 2018, Haller becomes the Irons’ fourth summer signing and cannot wait to bring his considerable talents to London Stadium and the Premier League.

"I feel really great,” said the centre forward. “I think it’s a really good opportunity for me to be here.

"It means a lot (to be the record signing). It proves that the club [has] really wanted me for a long time. I felt this desire to sign me and I’m really happy to sign, also. it is an ambitious club, a nice club, a nice city and nice fans too
