Arsenal have met Thomas Partey’s £45m release clause and are expected to complete the Atlético Madrid player’s signing on Monday night.

Unless there is a last-minute hitch Partey, a long-term target for Arsenal, will complete their transfer activity for this window and give a significant boost to Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

Arsenal had been struggling to land Partey or another potential acquisition, Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, but advised La Liga of their intention to pay the release fee on Monday. In Spain, meeting a release clause effectively bypasses negotiations with the selling club; Atlético have been informed that Arsenal have, as required, paid in a lump sum and Arteta is likely to get his man.

Partey is believed to be scheduled for a medical in Madrid and loose ends will be tied up on Monday night. Should all remaining hurdles be crossed, the Guardian understands personal terms would be a formality. Partey would sign a four-year deal worth about £230,000 a week and would receive seven-figure signing-on fee.

One of Arsenal’s midfielders, Matteo Guendouzi, has signed for Hertha Berlin on a season’s loan. Guendouzi has been out of favour since June and Arteta, exasperated by various issues with the player, has been keen to move him on. Hertha are understood to have paid a loan fee but there is no obligation to buy.

Atletico dont know anything about Arsenal paying Thomas buy out clause (?50m). They of course do not need to know as that is done directly with @LaLiga but after talking regularly about Lucas Torreira, they expect a courtesy call that has not arrived... yet

Arsenal are trying to conclude a deadline day deal for long-term target Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

The Ghana international midfielder, 27, has a release clause of £45m.

The Gunners' Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira, 24, would likely move in the opposite direction and join the La Liga side on loan.

Partey, who joined Atletico in 2011, made 35 league appearances for Diego Simeone's side as they finished third last season, scoring three goals.

Arsenal have been linked with Partey and Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, 22, throughout the summer transfer window.

However, Aouar has told French TV he will remain at the Ligue 1 club.

Partey, who won the 2017-18 Europa League and 2018 Super Cup with Atletico, signed a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2018, until the end of June 2023.

Among their completed deals, the Gunners have so far added Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes for 26m euros (£23.14m) from Lille, former Chelsea forward Willian on a free transfer and re-signed Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid.

The Premier League side's French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, 21, is nearing a loan move to Hertha Berlin while Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Sead Kolasinac, 27, could potentially return to Germany via a loan move to Bayer Leverkusen.

There is no deal to be done with Atletico Madrid [for Partey] because Atletico will not negotiate at all.

That means what Arsenal have to do is go to La Liga and say they are willing to meet his buyout clause.

So no negotiating is taking place, Arsenal just have to take that last step.

It has been reported in Spain they they are willing to pay the 50 million euros of his buyout clause, so we will have to see.

Thomas Partey is a midfielder with the ability to pass short and long with quality. He's very intelligent in the way he moves, brave in the way he presses high and helps the team with high dynamism.

One-touch football is something that he enjoys. He is strong, fast as well, so there is a lot to like with Partey.

Arsenal have met Thomas Partey’s £45m release clause and now the race is on to get everything done. It’s a complicated business: in instances like this, the buying club deposits the release fee with La Liga, who then check the money has cleared and inform both player and club. Partey is believed to have completed his medical in Madrid, personal terms are all sorted – as per my earlier news story – and now he hopes to tie up the loose ends in London tonight. As long as the money clears in time, there should be no problems ... but expect to be hanging on for a few hours yet.

Thomas Partey will be a great signing for Arsenal. I was reading that Diego Simeone isn't happy because he wanted the pair - Lucas Torreira and Partey together.

For Arsenal they need that sort of player like Partey: a physical presence, he's very good on the ball, he plugs lots of gaps and with Dani Ceballos, they could form a real relationship in there.
