In 1899, a Football Association side toured Germany but it was in 1908 that the full England team went on its first overseas tour, to Austria, Hungary and Bohemia (as the Czech Republic was then called), winning all four games.

Belgium, in 1923, were the first side from the Continent to play a full international in England, and a year later England played their first match at Wembley Stadium, drawing 1-1 with Scotland (although it was not to become England's permanent home until 1966).

It was in 1929 that England lost for the first time to European opponents, Spain triumphing 4-3 in Madrid.triumphing 。 More remarkable, though, is the fact that it was not until 1953, 81 years after the first international, that England lost at home to a national side from continental Europe, Hungary winning 6-3

Because of a disagreement with FIFA over payments to amateur players, England did not enter the World Cups in 1930, '34 and '38。

England, hampered by climatic conditions, failed to progress beyond their qualifying group.

In the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, England fared better, losing in the quarter-finals to Uruguay. Four years later, England drew all their group games and failed to qualify for the knock-out phase.1962, England progressed to the quarter-finals where they were beaten by Brazil.

England's finest international hour came four years later in 1966, when Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley on 30 July 1966

Grouped with Uruguay, Mexico and France, England drew one game and won the others to progress to the quarter-finals where Argentina lay in wait. England won a bruising encounter 1-0 and then beat Portugal 2-1 in the semis.

In the final, England won 4-2, after extra-time , with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick, the only man to do so in a World Cup Final. The team that day was: G Banks, G Cohen, R Wilson, N Stiles, J Charlton, R Moore, A Ball, R Hunt, R Charlton, G Hurst, M Peters.

England also enters the UEFA European Football Championship (formerly the European Nations Cup).England first entered in 1962/63, losing in the first round to France.,In 1968, England fared better, getting to the semi-finals, a feat they repeated in 1996. Over 1,100 players have been selected for England's senior team, with Peter Shilton, on 125 appearances, the most capped player. Bobby Charlton, with 49 goals, is England's leading goal-scorer.

Steve McClaren was the eleventh person to hold the job as England Head Coach permanently since The FA made Walter Winterbottom its first Director of Coaching in 1946.

Nowadays, The FA is involved in the organisation of more than 50 international matches, home and away, in any one season - at Senior, "B", Under-21, Youth, Schoolboy, Semi-Professional and Women's levels,

At the Finals in Korea and Japan, England qualified from the 'group of death' recording a memorable victory of Argentina in the Sapporo Dome. A three-nil win against Denmark in the pouring rain set up a quarter-final against Brazil and Michael Owen gave the Three Lions great hope when he opened the scoring early-on.

However, goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho sent England home and crushed their hopes of lifting the World's biggest prize.
England also reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2004. having negotiated a tricky group involving France, Croatia and Switzerland, England crashed out on penalties to hosts Portugal.
In their last World Cup, in Germany, it was almost a case of Deja Vu as Portugal again knocked England out of the competition on penalties at the quarter-final stage. After a 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen, the Three Lions, who had been reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Wayne Rooney, once again failed from

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo scored the all-important kick after Frank Lampard, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard had all missed.

That game marked Eriksson's last in charge and new Head Coach Steve McClaren took over as England looked towards their Euro 2008 qualification campaign.

England's Youngest Player

Arsenal's Theo Walcott became England's youngest ever player aged just 17 years and 75 days when he made his debut as a substitute against Hungary in May 2006.

Walcott's introduction as a second-half substitute in the International Friendly, the Three Lion's penultimate warm-up game prior to the 2006 World Cup, meant that he beat Wayne Rooney's previous record set three years earlier. He was 17 years 111 days when he appeared as a substitute against Australia in February 2003

Chris' Profile

A hugely talented goalkeeper, Kirkland made his long-awaited debut in August 2006.

Tall and agile, Kirkland shot to prominence during his time at Coventry City before he signed for Liverpool at the start of the 2001/2 season for £6m.

However, limited chances with the Anfield club led Kirkland to seek opportunities elsewhere and he moved to West Brom on-loan for the 2005/6 season. The following season he joined Wigan on loan.

Kirkland made six appearances at Under-21 level and has been regularly selected for the senior side since 2003.

His chance finally came when he played 45 minutes at Old Trafford against Greece – an appearance which brought a smile to his father’s face as the doting dad had placed a wager a few years before on his son playing for England at odds of 100/1!

Rio's profile

Rio was first selected for England in a Wembley friendly just eight days after his 19th birthday.

Commanding performances for England at the 2002 World Cup cemented his status as one of the world’s best defenders and led to a massive £29.1 million transfer from Leeds to Manchester United.

This "Rolls Royce" of a defender was once again in imperious form at the 2006 World Cup. When at his best, Rio is one of the world’s most outstanding defenders.

Ashley's profile

With electric pace and an attacking instinct, Ashley has added an extra dimension to England’s left side.

Though still young, he has been a regular since 2001 and was an ever-present at the 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

One of Ashley’s greatest strengths is that, the bigger the game and the tougher the opponent, the better Ashley gets.

Wes' Profile

A naturally talented centre-half, Brown seemed destined for stardom when he broke into the Manchester United line-up at the tender age of 18.

The born a bred Mancunian had already won The FA Youth Cup when he appeared as a substitute against Leeds in May 1998, but Brown went on to achieve great things the following year.

Having struck up an excellent partnership with Jaap Stam, Brown won a historical treble with The Reds, culminating in a wonderful night in Barcelona.

Cruelly injuries hampered Brown’s development and, despite being named in England’s World Cup 2002 squad, the United defender has been forced to battle back from a number of set-backs.

But a run in the United side and a return to form helped Brown get an international recall under Steve McClaren.

Micah's profile

At 18 years and 144 days old, Micah became England's 7th youngest player, and youngest ever defender, when he was handed his first senior start for the November 2006 friendly away in Holland.

Powerful defender Micah made his first-team debut for City in their Premiership defeat at Highbury in October 2005 and went on to play 16 times for Stuart Pearce's side last campaign.

Memorably he scored his first goal for the club in the final moments of an FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Aston Villa and also notched another late equaliser against Everton. At international level, Micah has been capped for the U16s, U19s and earned his first caps with the U21s against Moldova in August 2006.

Owen's profile

Owen quickly graduated from England’s Under-21s to the senior team during 2001, making his debut in the friendly with Holland at White Hart Lane.

Initially appearing on the left of midfield, Canadian-born Hargreaves looks assured in a range of positions, including right-back and in various positions in midfield.

Having played in both the 2002 World Cup and 2004 European Championship, Owen was voted by England's fans as England's player of the 2006 World Cup after brilliant performances against Sweden and Portugal.

Owen is renowned for being one of the quickest and fittest members of the squad and is a valuable asset in the England squad.

Steven's profile

The beating heart of Liverpool and one of England’s midfield stars, Steven Gerrard has been in the form of his life for, it seems, his whole career.

Scoring incredible goals for fun, crunching into tackles, and driving through the very heart of the opposition are all trademark Gerrard moves.

He can also play anywhere. Dangerous as a roving forward off the front man, threatening come in off the right wing, bursting down the left flank, a diligent anchorman to protect the back four or piling forward from the centre of the park, at his best, Steve will appear everywhere. And he’s not a bad right back either!

Never satisfied, ‘Stevie G’ has all the attributes to go on to universally recognised as one of the world’s greatest midfielders.

Shaun's profile

Shaun enjoyed a great season with Manchester City in 2003-04. He was a shining light in much of their attacking football and earned his first call-up to the full squad to face Sweden.

Though he didn't get on the pitch in Gothenburg, he continued to dazzle the Premiership with his raiding forward play and weighed in with a number of fabulous strikes.

He started where he left off in the current campaign and fully deserved his debut as a substitute in the August friendly with Ukraine at St. James' Park.

But not content with just a new cap, he also produced a fine individual goal to help England round off a 3-0 win.

Joe's profile

Joe began with West Ham United and from an early age his extravagant skill and ability to produce the unexpected led to both praise and pressure being heaped upon him. He has taken it all in his stride, though, and is developing well under Jose Mourinho's watchful eye at Chelsea.

Over the past year or so Cole has also proven to be a very useful goalscoring outlet for the Three Lions, scoring against Denmark in November 2003 and twice during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. However Joe left the best to the Finals, scoring one of the goals of the tournament with his spectacular dipping volley against Sweden.

Joe has now added delivery and defensive responsibility to his undoubted skill. He is also a student of the game and a massive fan of football. He looks to have the world at his talented feet.

Wayne’s profile

Not for nothing did Wayne become England’s youngest ever player (at 17 years 111 days) against Australia in February 2003.

Theo Walcott may have now taken that accolade but Wayne remains one of the most exciting prospects England has ever produced.

He is strong, quick, tricky, has a habit of scoring spectacular goals and is still developing.

Wayne became the European Championship's youngest ever goalscorer, albeit briefly, when he netted the first of his brace against Switzerland in Coimbra in 2004. He went on to score two more against Croatia to become England's leading marksman at that tournament.

His achievements were recognised by the UEFA technical study group, who included him in the official Euro 2004 All-Star squad.

The 2006 World Cup was a less successful affair for Wayne. Having won his battle for fitness, he was dismissed in England’s crucial Quarter Final with Portugal.

However, Wayne remains one of the world’s greatest players. You suspect him and the World Cup is unfinished business.

Micheal Owen [Newcastle]
Michael Owen's wonder goal for England against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup finals propelled him to the forefront of international acclaim.
Owen, then with Liverpool, was only 18 when he tore through the Argentinian defence before finishing in sublime fashion. England lost in a penalty shoot-out, but Owen made an indelible mark with his majestic strike.

His greatest feat for his country, however, came in a World Cup qualifier in Germany in September 2001 when he hit a hat-trick in an unforgettable 5-1 romp.

Owen made his Liverpool debut against Wimbledon in the penultimate game of the 1996-97 season, when he came on as a substitute and scored in a 2-1 defeat.

The following season, he emerged as the Premiership's joint-top scorer with 18 goals, and his star was firmly in the ascendant after France '98.

In 2001, he inspired a famous fightback as he scored two late goals in Liverpool's FA Cup triumph over Arsenal in the first final staged at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

It was part of a trophy treble as Liverpool also won the League Cup and UEFA Cup. It became an unprecedented five honours in a calendar year as they lifted the Charity Shield and European Super Cup, and Owen was named European Footballer of the Year.

In the summer of 2004, Liverpool cashed in on an ambitious Owen when he moved to Real Madrid for £8million.

He struggled to command a regular place with Real, but still scored 13 goals in La Liga in his one season in Spain.

In August 2005, he joined Newcastle for £17m after a hoped-for return to Liverpool failed to materialise.

Around 20,000 fans turned up at St. James' Park to greet Owen. He scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at West Ham, but suffered a broken metatarsal on New Year's Eve at Tottenham and missed virtually all of the remainder of the season before heading to the World Cup.

But he was cruelly struck by injury again, damaging his anterior cruciate ligament against Sweden. He underwent surgery in the United States in September and was expected to be out for the rest of the campaign.

Jermain's profile

Jermain is one of England’s most exciting young prospects. After being linked to both Manchester United and Arsenal, he finally put pen to paper with Spurs to return to the Premiership in January 2004.

His combination of pace and clinical finishing has allowed him to continue his goalscoring form in the top domestic league.

Jermain put in an awesome performance in the world Cup qualifier in Poland, scoring a vital goal on his first England start and he went on to figure in eight of England's World Cup qualifiers.
