Lille's promising season ended with a huge thud as they missed a penalty in losing their final match at Lorient, crashing out of the Champions League places on the final day of the season.
Lille began the night in second place and holding all the cards, but fell behind both Lyon and Auxerre with tonight's stunning defeat.
Everything seemed to be going well when Ricardo Costa headed the visitors in front, but Kevin Gameiro quickly equalised and Lille's night took a turn for a worse when Yohan Cabaye missed a penalty early in the second half.
Yann Jouffre punished that with Lorient's second, and although the hosts had Marama Vahirua sent off in the final minute, it was too late for Lille.
With everything in their hands, Lille began brightly and should have scored early, but Arnold Mvuemba cleared Costa's fourth-minute header off the line with the goalkeeper beaten.
At the other end, Lorient's topscorer Gameiro fired wide when one-on-one with Mickael Landreau.
Lille led in the 31st minute as Costa climbed highest to head home Cabaye's corner.
But it lasted only six minutes as Gameiro waltzed through the defence before lashing the ball past Landreau.
Cabaye had a golden chance to restore Lille's lead when Fabien Audard brought down Gervinho, but the goalkeeper made up for the mistake as he dived the right way.
Lille were left to rue the miss as Jouffre put Lorient ahead in the 64th minute, beating Emerson before firing in from a tight angle.
Lille looked flat and Lorient had the only other chance on the counter-attack, but Gervinho fired wide.
The night ended on a sour note for Vahirau, sent off for what appeared an accidental headbutt, but it did not change a devastating result for Lille.
