Benfica 1-2 Porto: Hulk fires unbeaten Dragoes to Portuguese league title
In a highly charged match which saw Nicolas Otamendi and Oscar Cardozo dismissed in the second half, Porto secure the title in their rivals' own stadium
Porto have been crowned Portuguese league champions for the 25th time after beating rivals Benfica 2-1 on Sunday evening.
The Dragoes opened the score early on in Lisbon via Fredy Guarin, but Javier Saviola converted a spot kick to restore parity. Brazil international Hulk then decided the match when he scored a penalty on the half-hour mark.
Porto started the match with attacking intentions and needed only nine minutes to break the deadlock. In-form midfielder Freddy Guarin surprised the Benfica goalkeeper Roberto, who fumbled the midfielder's effort into his own goal.
The hosts levelled shortly after as Nicolas Otamendi fouled Franco Jara inside the area and Javier Saviola fired home the resulting penalty kick.
Roberto's poor match in the Benfica goal continued at the half-hour mark when Radamel Falcao went to the ground after a challenge from the Spanish shot stopper, leaving the referee no other choice but to award a spot kick. Hulk stepped up to restore his side's lead.
Chances became scarce as the game wore on but heavy challenges failed to subside throughout the game and Otamendi received his marching orders in the 69th minute for a second yellow.
Benfica didn't finish the game with 11 players either though as Oscar Cardozo was shown a red card for a wild swipe at Fernando Belluschi.
Porto have now collected 71 points from 25 games and are still unbeaten with five more matches remaining. Benfica have accumulated 55 points and will have to settle for second place this season.
