Emre Can demanding release clause in new Liverpool deal
Paul Joyce, Northern Football Correspondent September 6 2017, 12:01am, The Times
Emre Can’s contract talks with Liverpool have reached an impasse because the midfielder’s representatives want a release clause inserted in any new deal.
Liverpool are reluctant to agree to the request, which is why there has been little progress during discussions that have gone on for more than a year, during which Can has entered the final 12 months of his existing deal.
The Anfield club exploited a £9.75 million release clause when signing Can from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and were aware of the potential for the player’s agents, International Soccer Management, to seek one in the future.
Jürgen Klopp has described the situation as “not too cool”, but remains philosophical given that Can’s commitment and form have not suffered this season.
Liverpool resolved not to sell him during the transfer window because they believed that the proceeds would not equal his value over the course of a season.
He could leave on a free next summer, but that would coincide with the arrival of Naby Keïta for £51 million from RB Leipzig.
Jurgen Klopp - Liverpool will try to sign Emre Can right up to the last moment No sign of a breakthrough in contract talks but Reds will keep trying until May
Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will try to sign Emre Can right up until the end of the season - suggesting there is no sign yet of any breakthrough in the player's long-running contract saga.
The 23-year-old German midfielder is out of contract at Anfield the end of the season and has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus and Bayern Munich.
Speaking at Melwood, Klopp insisted there were no developments on Can's contract situation.
"I said he could still sign a contract in May. That's how it is. Persuade him? That's what we try to do all the time.
"We have to be as attractive as possible as a club so no-one wants to leave. That's not changed."
Juventus continue to monitor Liverpool's Emre Can ahead of potential summer deal By Sky in Italy Last Updated: 29/12/17 7:16pm
Juventus are continuing to monitor Emre Can’s situation at Liverpool with a view to signing him on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer, according to Sky in Italy.
Can, who can sign a pre-contract agreement with a European club next month, said in October that it is "always an honour to receive an offer from such a renowned club".
The 23-year-old Germany international has been an instrumental part of Liverpool's season so far, scoring four goals in 23 appearances from midfield, but he has not agreed a new contract with the club.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted he will not put pressure on Can to recommit, stating in November that "we have to respect his contract is ending and that's how it is".
But the German also said he would welcome the player signing a new contract at the end of the season.
Can joined Liverpool in a £10m deal from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and he has made over 100 appearances since, scoring 12 goals in all competitions.
Juventus are in advanced talks to sign Liverpool's Emre Can in the summer, according to Sky in Italy.
The 23-year-old Germany midfielder is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club, having entered the last six months of his contract at Anfield.
Italian champions Juve have been pursuing Can for some time but Sky Germany understand he will not leave the Merseyside club in the January transfer window.

Liverpool, Emre Can has chosen Juventus for June: positive conversations in the last hours
It is not a crazy move for January but a big one for June as Emre Can of Liverpool has chosen Juventus. Positive conversations between the player's agent and the bianconeri in the last hours have taken place the decision is by now made. The German will officially sign once he is permitted to, but it seems like everything is almost finalized. In the coming days we will see if Liverpool will be willing to let the player go now since they are going to lose him, but it is a very difficult hypothesis. One thing is for sure though, Emre Can has chosen Juventus.
Juventus have made an important bid to Emre Can for next June, 5 years contract ready for him. Liverpool don’t want to sell Emre on January but the midfielder is in advanced talks to join Juventus for free on next summer. 🇩🇪🇮🇹 #transfers #LFC #Liverpool

Liverpool's Emre Can 'to be announced Juventus player after Champions League semi-final' Germany international has been pursued for some time by Italian giants The future of Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has been decided, according to reports in Italy.
Can is set to leave Anfield on a free transfer at the end of the season with talks having stalled last year over a new deal.
Juventus have been long-time suitors of the Germany international, who has also attracted rumoured interest from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Italian media have previously claimed Juventus had set several deadlines for a decision from Can, all of which passed without conclusion.
But now Gazzetta dello Sport are stating a deal has been reached with Can that could see the 24-year-old earn more than £5million a year with the Serie A side.
The report also claims the move will be announced after Liverpool's Champions League semi-final second leg against Roma on Wednesday.
Can hasn't played for Liverpool since mid-March after being sidelined by a back injury.

Juventus are closing in on the signing of Emre Can from Liverpool .
The German midfielder's switch to Serie A could be confirmed this month - once the Champions League final is out of the way.
Can has long been expected to move to Turin this summer, when his deal at Anfield will expire. Liverpool have been unable to agree fresh terms with the 24-year-old, and are resigned to his departure.
Goal understands that Can is ready to sign a five-year deal with Juventus, which sources in Italy claim will net him around ?5 million (£4m/$6m) a year plus bonuses.
An announcement is likely to be made once Liverpool have played their Champions League final with Real Madrid on May 26.
Can was this week left out of the Germany squad for this summer's World Cup in Russia having missed the last two months of the season with a back problem.
He travelled with Jurgen Klopp's squad for their warm-weather training camp in Marbella on Wednesday, and is set to resume training in Spain. That raises the possibility of the former Bayern Munich man being involved against Real Madrid a week on Saturday, though he would need to prove his fitness to Klopp before he could even be considered for a place on the bench.
Can joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and has made 166 appearances since, scoring 14 goals.
He has been the subject of interest from numerous clubs once it became apparent that a new deal at Anfield was unlikely. Manchester City, former club Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have all made enquiries, but Juventus appear to have won the race as the Bianconeri look to re-shape their team next season. Liverpool, meanwhile, will complete the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig on July 1 , with the Reds set to pay a total of £52.75m for the Guinea star. Klopp is expected to target at least one more midfielder this summer, with his need heightened by Can's imminent exit.
Meanwhile, young forward Yan Dhanda is set to join Swansea upon the expiry of his Reds contract next month.
