City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea all in £53m race for Napoli’s Jorginho



Jorginho, the Napoli midfielder, expects to move to England this summer, with each member of the Premier League’s top six interested in signing the Italian.

It is understood that Napoli have set an asking price of ?60 million (£52.9 million) for Jorginho after he played a key role in helping the Italian club mount a title challenge.

The 26-year-old has scored three goals – including one against Manchester City – this season, but his main role has been linking Napoli’s defence and attack.

City, the Premier League champions, have scouted Jorginho extensively this season, and are considered to be the front-runners in the race for the holding midfielder’s signature.

Jorginho, who was born in Brazil, but moved to Italy at a young age, is an admirer of Pep Guardiola’s style of play. The City manager views Jorginho as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, who turned 33 last week. The Catalan will also be one midfielder light for next season after Yaya Touré reached the end of his contract.

But Guardiola will face competition from second-placed Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Arsenal for Jorginho.

All five clubs have sounded out the Italian’s representatives through intermediaries recently.

Jorginho is Liverpool’s no.1 midfield target for the summer transfer window, but the Merseyside club believe he is likely to plump for City.

Jorginho has also told friends that he believes Maurizio Sarri, who presently manages Napoli, would be interested in taking him to Chelsea should he replace Antonio Conte in the home dugout at Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Jorginho has made it clear that he would like to move to England at the end of the season and plans to speak to Napoli officials following the culmination of the Italian season in just under two weeks’ time.

Napoli are refusing to budge from their asking price, which could prove tricky for Arsenal, who also have the disadvantage of not being able to offer the midfielder Champions League football.

The Italian club have reluctantly accepted that they will have to cash in on Jorginho, who they signed from Verona four years ago, because he has two years left on his contract.

Jorginho won the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2014. The midfielder has Italian citizenship through his grandparents and has played for the national team five times.

Manchester City will discover over the next week if their move for Jorginho is on.

The Napoli midfielder is among Pep Guardiola's top targets this summer. And the Italian is keen on a move to the Premier League champions if a deal can be struck between the clubs.

City want to tie up their summer transfer business ahead of the World Cup - having already secured new deals for manager Guardiola and goalkeeper Ederson within a week of the season finishing.

Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos is due to meet with Napoli next week to discuss the 26-year-old’s future, with the biggest stumbling block being the Italian club’s valuation of more than £60m.

Discussions between the clubs have been described as 'positive', with the 26-year-old now looking increasingly likely to join Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions.

The Blues are already understood to have agreed personal terms with the Italy international on a basic £80,000 a week with substantial bonuses, and are keen to wrap up the deal before the World Cup gets underway in just over a fortnight.

The captain has hinted over the last few weeks that he could head to China after Maurizio Sarri’s departure, but the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti could change his mind.

Jorginho saga continues as after Manchester City's latest offer - ?47 million plus 5-6 millions in bonuses, but the final figures of the deal could reach 55 million - the Citizens are not willing to wait more than a week for a response.

The latest news is that young Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was already linked to the partenopei in January, could be involved as part of the deal and now the midfielder born in 1996 could be the key to a positive conclusion to the Jorginho saga.

Manchester City 'on verge' of sealing deal for Napoli midfielder Jorginho

Manchester City are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho according to the president of the Italian club.

City have been trying to reach a compromise over the size of the fee demanded by Napoli for more than a week, but there appears to have been significant progress made over the weekend.

The Italy international has been a long-standing transfer target for City, but they had refused to be forced into paying an extortionate price for the 26-year-old.

City have had a bid of around 50m Euros turned down already this summer, but Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is confident the transfer will go through after further talks were held.

"I think the deal can be done in the next few days," De Laurentiis told Sun Sport. "Everything is possible as we have a good relationship with Manchester City and their people but we must negotiate.

"We are still not in agreement over the price for the player, but we'll be near to the conclusion as they made an effort in the last few days."

City were already aware of Jorginho’s quality, but he impressed Guardiola during City’s Champions League games against Napoli last season, when the decision was made to pursue his signature in this transfer window.

Jorginho, who was born in Brazil and holds dual citizenship, has made 133 Serie A appearances for Napoli since joining the club from Hellas Verona in 2014.

He can play in a variety of midfield positions, but is likely to be used in a more defensive role by City, providing De Laurentiis’ positive assessment of the negotiations is shared in Manchester

Manchester City are closing in on a deal in the region of £46.5m for Napoli midfielder Jorginho, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News understands that, despite reports in Italy, no deal has been agreed as yet.

A number of issues are still to be sorted, including payment schedules, add-ons and the possibility of a pre-season friendly between the two clubs.

The Italy international has posted a picture on Instagram boarding a flight at the end of a family holiday to Brazil and is expected to head for Manchester for a medical whenever an agreement is reached.

Jorginho made 37 appearances for Napoli last season, scoring three goals, including one against City in the Champions League in November.

The 26-year-old started his career at Verona before moving to Naples in 2014 where he went on to win the Coppa Italia that year.

Pep Guardiola hopes to sign Jorginho in time for the start of pre-season training on Monday, with Manchester City and Napoli close to finalising a deal for the midfielder.

The 26-year-old is expected to complete the transfer in time for him to participate in the champions’ start to their preparation for next season. The initial fee will be in the region of ?49m (£43m) for the Brazilian-born Italy international, who is set to agree a five-year contract.

If Jorginho does join he will replace the departed Yaya Touré, who left when his contract expired last month, and challenge Fernandinho for a starting berth as the sole holding player Guardiola often operates with.

The manager remains in pole position to prise Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City, though an agreement between the clubs is yet to be agreed. The basic price of the Algeria international is expected to start at £60m and with add-ons may raise to £75m.

Joe Hart is due to report for training with Guardiola’s squad despite his future still remaining undecided. The 31-year-old has a year left on his contract but having spent each of the Catalan’s two seasons in charge on loan his City career is effectively over. Hart will wait to see what offers he receives before deciding where he will play next year.

Chelsea are set to finally put an end to their managerial stalemate after Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed a double deal for Maurizio Sarri and midfielder Jorginho to move to Stamford Bridge is close.

The Blues have been in negotiations with Napoli over making Sarri the successor to head coach Antonio Conte since the end of last season, but had been unable to strike an agreement. But it appears Chelsea have finally found a solution by agreeing to pay £50 million, plus £7m in bonuses, to take both Sarri and Jorginho, who had been a target of Manchester City.

Italian reports have also claimed that Cesc Fabregas could move in the opposite direction, but Telegraph Sport understands the Spaniard is not interested in joining Napoli.

Confirming Chelsea are close to finally making a breakthrough, De Laurentiis said: “The Sarri deal is in the homestretch, it depends on him.

“I’ve laid down my conditions. It’s all in the hands of lawyers. Jorginho? We said to ourselves, ‘If Jorginho has any requests, we’ll take them into account’.

“For that, I’ll have to apologise to Manchester City. However, if the player would rather live in London than Manchester, I can understand that.

“If Chelsea are paying him even more, I can understand that too. Jorginho and Sarri together again? Jorginho would go to Chelsea regardless of Sarri.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea have joined Manchester City in the battle to sign Italy midfielder Jorginho.

City manager Pep Guardiola identified Jorginho as his replacement for Yaya Toure, who left the club at the end of last season.

The 26-year-old indicated a willingness to join the Premier League champions, leaving City confident of completing a deal for about £50m.

However, De Laurentiis said he had concluded negotiations with City two weeks ago but that Jorginho had subsequently told him his preference was a move to London.

"If the player would rather live in London than Manchester, I can understand that," said De Laurentiis.

"I'll have to apologise to Manchester City", he added.

"If Chelsea are paying him even more, I can understand that too. Jorginho and Sarri together again? Jorginho would go to Chelsea regardless of Sarri."

Jorginho signed for Napoli in 2014 and made 36 appearances for the Serie A side last season, scoring against City in the Champions League in November.
