Vermaelen to follow Sagna out of Arsenal this summer
The form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker saw the Gunners' captain lose his starting place last season and he will seek a fresh challenge after the World Cup

Thomas Vermaelen is set to follow Bacary Sagna out of the Arsenal exit door this summer.

The Gunners' captain wants to find a new club after slipping down the pecking order at Emirates Stadium over the last 15 months.

Arsenal expect the Belgian to become their second senior defender to leave in this window following Sagna,

whose transfer to Manchester City on a three-year deal was confirmed on Friday.

Vermaelen has only a year remaining on his contract and Arsenal are unlikely to stand

in the way of a move if they receive an offer that matches their ?10 million valuation.

Manchester United and Napoli are among the clubs closely monitoring the versatile defender's situation.

The 28-year-old is expected to be a key figure for widely fancied Belgium in the World Cup, starting alongside Vincent Kompany in the centre of defence.

A strong tournament could increase interest across Europe in Vermaelen and give him more options later in the summer.

The Belgium international has been the third-choice centre-back at Arsenal since an error-strewn display in a 2-1 derby defeat to Tottenham in March 2013

prompted Arsene Wenger to make Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny his preferred central defence partnership.

Mertesacker and Koscielny have both signed contract extensions in recent months, keeping them at the Emirates until 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Arsenal will be in the market for a new centre-back if Vermaelen ends his five-year spell at the club.

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a deal in principle to join Manchester United this summer.
United must now agree a fee with Arsenal after the World Cup, but Vermaelen hopes to move to Old Trafford and is preparing to leave the Emirates.
Central defender Vermaelen only has one year remaining on his Arsenal contract and
has found himself pushed out of manager Arsene Wenger’s first-choice team by Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
New United manager Louis van Gaal is desperate to strengthen United’s defence and believes Vermaelen can find his best form under him.
The 28-year-old has been at Arsenal for five years after signing from Dutch club Ajax.
He got off to a superb start with the Gunners, but injuries curtailed his progress.

Vermaelen earns around £70,000-a-week and it is understood he has verbally agreed a deal with United that would see him pocket around £100,000-a-week.
Arsenal cannot expect to receive more than £10million for Vermaelen with only a year remaining on his contract.
Vermaelen is currently with the Belgium squad in Brazil for the World Cup, but wants his future sorted out as quickly as possible once the tournament ends.
He shares the same agent as Robin van Persie and that is understood to have been key to United’s interest.
Arsenal have been preparing for the possible departure of Vermaelen by lining up a number of defensive targets including Steven Caulker and Virgil van Dijk.
Although Vermaelen is not a first-team starter for Arsenal any more, his departure to United would be another blow for Wenger after losing Bacary Sagna to Manchester City.

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

New United boss Louis van Gaal is reportedly keen on the defender who is currently on World Cup duty with Belgium.

Vermaelen has just one year left on his contract at the Emirates

and despite spending most of last season on the substitutes bench insists he has still not made a decision over his future.

He told Sky Sports News: "I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it's not true.

"Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left.

"I understand that people are going to talk but I am here in Brazil and I am enjoying my time and I'm focused on what I am doing."

Vermaelen refused to be drawn on whether he has held talks with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about his future at the club.

He added: "We talk a lot when I am at Arsenal but it's not what I am going to discuss here, it is something you are going to have to ask him."

Manchester United aim to complete the signing of Thomas Vermaelen as soon as Belgium’s World Cup campaign is over.

United are poised to seal the £10million capture of Vermaelen as they address the double defensive loss of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Belgium take on Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals tomorrow and their potential exit from the tournament will accelerate United’s efforts to push through the deal.

Vermaelen has fallen behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as a first-choice central defender at Arsenal and is said to be keen for a fresh challenge.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season

and United were hoping to land him for a cut-price fee of around £6m, but Arsenal are understood to be holding out for at least £10m.

Vermaelen is set to become new United boss Louis van Gaal’s third signing,

following the capture of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao for £28.8m and Luke Shaw from Southampton for £27m.
