David Ospina: Arsenal sign Colombia goalkeeper from Nice



Arsenal have signed Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina from Nice on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.
Ospina, 25, had been with French Ligue 1 side Nice since 2008 and helped his country reach the quarter-finals at the recent World Cup in Brazil.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said: "David is an excellent goalkeeper.
He will add strength to our squad and we are very pleased that he will be joining us.
"He has good experience and a proven record of performing."
Wenger had earlier suggested  that Ospina,
who is expected to make his debut at next month's Emirates Cup tournament, could displace Wojciech Szczesny as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

Speaking after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at New York Red Bulls, Wenger said that Ospina had proved his worth at Nice by replacing France keeper Hugo Lloris, now at Tottenham.
Wenger said: "I've known him for a long time because he played for Nice - he went there a few years ago and slowly became a very important player for them.
"Hugo Lloris played for Nice before he moved to Lyon. After he moved, they played Ospina. He had a big impact straight away and Lloris was not an easy player to replace."
Nice coach Claude Puel, speaking to Sky Sports News after Nice were beaten 3-2 at Brentford in a friendly on Saturday, said: "It's a good affair for Arsenal because he's a very good player. You will see next season the quality of this player."
Aresnal welcomed the player to the club and added that the move "is subject to the completion of regulatory processes".

Arsenal are close to completing deals for Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina and Atletico Madrid right-back Javi Manquillo, Goal understands.

The Gunners have agreed a £3 million fee with Nice for Ospina,

who performed impressively during the World Cup, and are also in advanced talks with Atletico to sign Manquillo on a season-long loan deal.

Arsenal are confident that deals for the pair can be wrapped up within the next week

as they continue to reshape their squad following the landmark £31.8m capture of Alexis Sanchez last week.



With two new right-backs set to sign for Arsenal, Carl Jenkinson is expected to be sent out on loan for the forthcoming season in order to play regular first-team football.

The probable signing of another senior international keeper will also provide strong competition for Wojciech Szczesny, w

ho was regularly the No.1 choice in both the Premier League and Champions League last season but was overlooked for their successful FA Cup campaign.

Wenger moved for Ospina after Arsenal failed to agree a fee for David Marshall during talks with Cardiff City.

The Gunners were unwilling to pay more than £6m for the 29-year-old Scot, while the Championship club held out for more than £8m.

Ospina, 25, is regarded as good value given his experience and the Gunners are in a strong position to negotiate a lower fee as he only has a year remaining on his Nice contract.

Transfer news: Arsenal chasing Nice's Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina



Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is chasing Nice's Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina, with a deal for around £3million nearing completion.

After his side's pre-season victory over Boreham Wood on Saturday, Wenger said he would bring in a new keeper "for sure" and confirmed he was actively looking.

Ospina announced in May ahead of the World Cup that he would not renew his contract with OGC Nice, which runs until the end of the 2014/15 season.

The 25-year-old put in a stellar performance for his country in the tournament in Brazil, conceding the least amount of goals of any South American goalkeeper in the tournament.

Wenger is in need of back-up to regular No 1 Wojciech Szczesny after the Pole's compatriot Lukasz Fabianski left the Emirates to join Swansea City on a free transfer.

The Frenchman has already bolstered his playing squad this summer with the signing of Chile forward Alexis Sanchez, from Barcelona,

and also brought in Newcastle United right-back Mathieu Debuchy earlier in the week - splashing out at least £42m in the process for the pair.

Arsene Wenger has agreed a £3m deal for Colombia’s World Cup goalkeeper David Ospina from Nice.
The Arsenal manager has moved to fill the gap in his squad that was created by Lukasz Fabianski’s Bosman transfer to Swansea City
at the end of last season and he has told Ospina that he wants him to compete with Wojciech Szczesny for the starting position.

Ospina, 25, played in each game of Colombia’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Brazil and he impressed with his reflexes and command on crosses.
