Aston Villa keen on signing Fulham's Richardson

Aston Villa are closing in on Kieran Richardson in a move which would reunite the midfielder with former manager Roy Keane.

Press Association Sport understands Villa are close to striking a deal for the Fulham player,

who has 12 months remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage and could be available for a modest fee following their relegation.

Should Villa manage to reach agreement, the 29-year-old would once again find himself working under Keane,

who recently accepted manager Paul Lambert's offer to combine his role as assistant to Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill with a similar position at Villa Park.

Keane knows Richardson from their time together at Manchester United,

and paid £5.5million to take him to Sunderland in July 2007 after taking over as manager at the Stadium of Light.

The former West Ham trainee, who left Wearside in a £2million switch to Fulham in August 2012,

was a member of the Cottagers squad which slipped out of the Barclays Premier League at the end of last season.

Premier League: Kieran Richardson having medical ahead of Aston VIlla move



Fulham defender Kieran Richardson is undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Aston Villa.

West Ham, West Brom and Crystal Palace have also been linked with the 29-year-old

but Villa manager Paul Lambert has moved to the head of the queue to sign the Englishman.

Richardson has a year left on his current Craven Cottage deal but is desperate to stay in the Premier League following the club's relegation to the Championship last season.

Despite finishing second bottom, the 2013/14 season proved his most productive in a Whites shirt as he scored four goals in 31 league appearances.

Richardson was spotted as a youngster by West Ham but moved to Manchester United in 2002 without playing a first-team game at Upton Park.

He spent five years at Old Trafford before joining Roy Keane's Sunderland in a £5.5m deal. In August 2012 he returned to London to join Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

Richardson, who famously helped West Brom avoid relegation in 2005 - scoring three goals in 12 appearances while on loan at the Hawthorns - has been capped eight times by England.

Transfer news: Kieran Richardson joins Aston Villa from Fulham

Kieran Richardson has completed his transfer to Aston Villa from Fulham.

Richardson, who can play at left-back or in midfield and counts Manchester United among his former clubs,

joins Villa on a two-year deal following Fulham's relegation to the Championship.

The 29-year-old joins fellow new arrivals Philippe Senderos and Joe Cole in Paul Lambert's squad for the new Premier League season.

Lambert said: "Kieran will complement many of the players here well with what he brings.

"He will add pace, a great deal of experience and he knows the Barclays Premier League. He's played a lot of games for a lad who has yet to turn 30.

"The grounding he gained at Manchester United has stood him in good stead and he knows what it is to compete in this league and to win things and that's important.

I'm delighted he's joined us and we're really looking forward to working with him."

Richardson almost joined Villa as a schoolboy before opting for West Ham, and he said of the club's training ground:

"The place has changed a lot, it's really magnificent and I'm delighted to be here.

"Villa Park itself has always been my favourite stadium out of all of the stadiums in which I've played in the Premier League.

It's got great atmosphere, the fans are magnificent and I'm really looking forward to playing here. I know I'm going to love it."

The move reunites Richardson with his former United team-mate Roy Keane - newly installed as Lambert's right-hand man.

"Roy is top-drawer," he told the official Villa website. "Outstanding as a player and excellent at man-management.

He tells you how it is which is good for players and I'm delighted to be working with him again.

"I'm looking forward to working with the manager, too. He wants to play attacking football, he wants the team going forward and that's great.

I haven't worked with him before, so I'm excited to start working with him now.

"For myself, I'm happy wherever I'm playing on the pitch, whether that's left back, left wing or centre midfield, even behind the striker.

"I'm happy to play wherever I'm needed. I've played in most positions - sometimes that can be a curse,

sometimes that can be a good thing, but hopefully I can nail down a position here at the club."
