Swansea have completed the signing of France striker Bafetimbi Gomis on a four-year deal, subject to international clearance.

The 28-year-old arrives on a free transfer after his contract with Lyon expired.

"Swansea City is pleased to announce the signing of French international striker Bafetimbi Gomis, subject to international clearance," read a statement on the club's website.

"The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Swans on a free transfer from French club Lyon."

Gomis was a target for the Swans last summer but after the proposed transfer stalled, they turned instead to Wilfried Bony.

Bony has been linked with a summer move away from the Liberty Stadium

but Swansea have indicated that Gomis has been signed to play alongside the Ivorian, rather than in place of him.

Gomis scored 22 goals last season and 62 in total over 172 appearances but was left out of France's World Cup squad by Didier Deschamps.

He had also been a long-term target for Newcastle but talks between the Magpies and the player's representatives failed to yield a deal.

"I've been really impressed speaking with the manager and the chairman over the last few days," Gomis later told the club's website.

"They showed they really wanted me - and that's one of the main reasons I chose Swansea ahead of the other interested clubs.

"They've been trying for over a year to sign me. It didn't quite happen back then, but they kept trying and I'm absolutely delighted to be here now.

"Although I've been aware of Swansea for a number of seasons, I've been following them a lot closer since the interest first materialised last year.

"It's a proud club with strong philosophies. It is growing all the time and I'm honoured to be given the opportunity to be part of it.

"I watched a number of games last season and I think the style will suit me. It's a collective, passing approach which I like.

I think the way the team play creates lots of chances for the striker and hopefully I can score plenty of goals."

The Frenchman added that he was looking forward to forming a partnership with Bony.

"I do not see Wilfried Bony as competition, more of an association, because I know we can also play perfectly together," he said "We can benefit each other and that will be strong for the team."

Transfer news: French striker Bafetimbi Gomis flying to Swansea for talks



Sky sources understand French striker Bafetimbi Gomis is flying to Swansea on Monday to hold talks over a potential move to the Liberty Stadium.

The 28-year-old is expected to meet with Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins and the club’s manager Garry Monk to thrash out terms over a free transfer.

Gomis is one of the most sought after free agents in Europe, following the expiry of his contract with Ligue 1 side Lyon.

The France international scored 22 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions for Lyon last season

and had been linked with a move to Premier League sides Newcastle, Sunderland and West Ham.

Gomis is not part of Didier Deschamps’ France World Cup squad but has made 12 appearances for Les Bleus, scoring three times.

Swansea are thought to have bid for Gomis last summer, before they signed Wilfried Bony.

The move for Gomis will inevitably put a question mark over Bony’s future with the club.

The 25-year-old’s agent recently said Bony will remain with Swansea unless the opportunity arises for him to move to a top six side in England, Germany, France or Spain.

Bony became Swansea’s club-record signing when he made a £13m move from Vitesse Arnhem and is currently on international duty at the World Cup with Ivory Coast.

Swansea also have Spanish forward Michu on their books, although the former Rayo Vallecano man has been linked with West Ham, Stoke and Napoli.

Michu scored 22 goals in his first season with Swansea but only found the back of the net on six occasions last term.

Sky Sports sources understand that Swansea City have agreed a four-year deal to sign striker Bafetimbi Gomis on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old, who was released by Lyon at the end of last season, is set to become Garry Monk’s second addition of the summer after already bringing in goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski from Arsenal.

A host of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, West Ham and Sunderland, were reported to be keen on the striker, who hit 17 goals in all competitions for Lyon last season.

Gomis has 12 France caps to his name and spent five years at the Stade de Gerland after arriving from St Etienne in 2009.

His future had been the subject of much speculation for the past year, with Swansea and Newcastle both said to be keen on him last summer, but he was free to leave Lyon after the expiry of his contract.

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins is confident that a deal to sign Bafetimbi Gomisis edging closer to being finalised.


The France international striker is a free agent after reaching the end of four-year stint at Olympique Lyonnais and has made no secret of his desire to move to the Premier League.

Gomis has been heavily linked with Swansea in the past month

and the 28-year-old has reportedly spent time at the club this week discussing terms and undergoing medical checks.

"I think it's good to do things with caution," Jenkins told the Swansea Evening Post.

"He (Gomis) is still here and we are hoping to get things concluded soon."

The 28-year-old, who had scored 94 goals in 243 appearances for Lyon including 14 in the league last season, also helped them to the Coupe de France in 2012.

Swansea, meanwhile, have announced that Javier Garcia has joined as goalkeeping coach from Sevilla,

where he was part of the backroom staff that helped to inspire the club's UEFA Europa League success last season.

The 34-year-old told Swansea's official website: "It was hard to leave Sevilla because it is such a good club with good people.

"But it's a great opportunity for me to work in such a positive environment where I can develop and grow with the club. It's an exciting challenge."
