Carlos Quieroz to stand down as Iran manager after the World Cup



Carlos Quieroz has announced that he will leave his post as Iran manager after the World Cup due to a lack of governmental support.

Queiroz guided Iran to their first clean sheet in four World Cup finals after they frustrated Nigeria in their Group F opener on Monday.

The former Real Madrid manager says he is no longer engaged in dialogue with the Iranian Football Association over staying

with the continent's best-ranked team and will not lead them into the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia.

"Yes my connection will finish here at the World Cup," Quieroz told Portuguese newspaper Publico.          

"There was not support from the government; there has stopped being a genuine interest because of the financial situation.

"The dialogue has been cut off and I have already decided not to stay."

The 61-year-old has no immediate retirement plans and hopes to become the first manager to qualify

four teams for the World Cup after leading South Africa to the 2002 tournament and Portugal in 2010.        

"I still feel well," he said. "Maybe my next professional choice I will be looking at becoming the first coach to qualify four different teams for the World Cup."

The former Manchester United assistant manager confirmed he has received several job offers but stated his preference is another role with an international side

"I've had an offer to stay in Brazil and in England but because of circumstances in my private life it is difficult for me to accept a position at a club," he said.

World Cup: Carlos Queiroz has quit as Iran coach after the team's exit in Brazil



Carlos Queiroz has announced he is quitting as Iran coach after the team failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup in Brazil.

Iran lost 3-1 to Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final Group F game on Wednesday, ending their hopes of advancing from the group stage to the knockout rounds.

Queiroz, formerly Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager at Manchester United, announced his decision to quit shortly after the defeat.

He said he was leaving because he failed to agree financial terms with Iranian football authorities.                  

Queiroz said: "I didn't receive any single concrete or attractive proposal to stay on over the last 11 months.

The 61-year-old Portuguese manager took over in 2011 and led the team through qualifying.

"As you can imagine I feel very proud and it's an honour to work for Iran.


I will always keep the country and the players in my heart.

"I fell in love with them but you can't have a marriage when only one person wants to stay married and unfortunately it's not the people on Facebook who make the decision.

"After going through the 11 months without hearing anything, I have been forced to make a decision.

"I have just come here to say thank you to all who have supported me and given me this opportunity to work for Iran.

Queiroz has also previously coached Portugal and Real Madrid.
