Arsenal are optimistic of signing Celtic defender Kieran Tierney, despite having a bid rejected for the Scotland international.

The Premier League club had a £15m approach turned down by the Scottish champions but are expected to return with an improved offer.

Arsenal do not expect personal terms to be a stumbling block.

Tierney has only played sporadically this year because of a hernia problem and is recuperating from surgery.

Arsenal will have to spend more than half of their summer transfer kitty if they are to sign Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.

The Scottish champions have rejected two bids from Arsenal, both of which are believed to be less than £19 million, for the 22-year-old.

Celtic value Tierney at closer to £25m, a fee which would make the full-back the most expensive player ever sold by the Scottish club.

Arsenal have a transfer budget of around £45m this summer but they will be able to reinvest any proceeds they generate through player sales.

Tierney’s wage demands are not thought to be a problem for Arsenal, who have been desperately trying to trim their bloated wage bill but are able to offer the full-back a deal in the region of £70,000-a-week.

The task of convincing Celtic to sell one of their prized assets will be complicated by the enormous fee that Manchester United are set to pay for Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Palace are looking to receive £50m for the defender, who has made 46 senior appearances for his club and a handful of showings for the England Under-21 side. Tierney, by contrast, has played 170 games for Celtic and captained Scotland at the age of 20.

Tierney suffered from injury problems last season, though, and underwent surgery for a double hernia at the end of May.

Arsenal have been looking for a long-term replacement at left-back for Nacho Monreal, who turned 33 in February. Sead Kolasinac has struggled at times in a back four, while Tierney can also provide cover at centre-back in both a four-man and three-man defence.

Meanwhile, Laurent Koscielny’s agent has held talks with the club over his future in north London. The Arsenal captain’s contract expires at the end of next season and the Frenchman will make a decision on his future over the coming weeks.

He will be able to leave for free at the end of next season but, at the age of 33, the French centre-half could decide that this summer is his last chance to move to another European club. According to reports in France, Lyon and Rennes are among the clubs interested in bringing Koscielny back to his home country.

If Koscielny left Arsenal, he would be the third of head coach Unai Emery’s five captains to depart the club this summer, after Petr Cech and Aaron Ramsey.

Arsenal will make a new bid of around £18million for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney as they edge closer to the Scottish club’s valuation.

Celtic rejected an opening offer of £15m from Arsenal for Tierney, telling the Gunners that they value him closer to £25m.

But the Gunners will increase their first bid by £3m in the hope that a compromise can be struck that will see the 22-year-old move to the Emirates.

Celtic could well dig their heels in and string out negotiations, but there is optimism within Arsenal that a deal can eventually be agreed.

Head coach Unai Emery is keen to sign Tierney for his attacking capabilities as much as his defensive qualities and believes he could eventually make a similar impact as Andrew Robertson at Liverpool.

Celtic have rejected a second bid, in the region of £25m, from Arsenal for Scotland left-back Kieran Tierney.

The English Premier League club, who had previously had an offer of £15m turned down, had been optimistic a deal could be reached for the 22-year-old.

On Friday, Arsenal increased their instalments-based offer for the defender, who is believed to be keen on moving south.

Talks are expected to continue between Celtic and Arsenal this week.

Tierney, who has also been linked with Italian club Napoli, is currently recovering from a double hernia operation and missed Celtic's opening Champions League qualifier against Sarajevo.

If the deal goes through, he would become the most expensive player in Scottish football history, with a £25m move surpassing the £19.7m Celtic received when striker Moussa Dembele joined Lyon in August 2018.

Tierney, who has been restricted to nine appearances this year, has won four league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups for Celtic.

The news of Celtic's rebuff came as a group of influential Arsenal supporters' organisations, fanzines and blogs joined forces to call for "better leadership" of the club and hit out at Stan Kroenke's "passive ownership".

A total of 16 signatories published a statement on Monday morning demanding change as the Gunners prepare for a third season without Champions League football.

Under a heading of '£WeCareDoYou', the imbalance of the Arsenal board, "soulless" atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium and a lack of transfer strategy are all accusations fired at Kroenke.
