Costa Rica are in the same World Cup group as England, Italy and Uruguay this summer.
Oviedo, who can also play at left-back, joined Everton from FC Copenhagen in August 2012 for £5m.
He has made 31 appearances for the Toffees, scoring twice - including the only goal against Manchester United in December.
Toffees manager Martinez told BT Sport: "A real negative today is the unfortunate incident and we need to give Bryan as much support as we can now.
He's had a terrific season and I've been very impressed with him.
He's an important player in the group and he deserves a speedy recovery.
"The injury to Bryan affected everyone. Those type of injuries leave a sick taste."
