William Saliba: Arsenal close to deal for Saint-Etienne defender

Arsenal are set to sign Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba in a 30m euro (£27m) deal that will see him loaned back to the Ligue 1 club next season.

The Gunners will pay for the 18-year-old in instalments, which will not have a major impact on their restricted budget of around £45m for this summer.

Saliba is one of the game's most highly rated young centre-backs.

Arsenal remain in the market for a player to come straight into the first-team squad in the same position.

Saliba joined Saint-Etienne in 2016 and no announcement on Arsenal's acquisition of the France Under-20 defender is expected for several days while the transfer is finalised.

Arsenal are also pursuing Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, 22, and additionally hope to recruit a central midfielder and winger.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal midfielder Edu will be confirmed as the club's first technical director imminently.

Edu, 41, played for Arsenal between 2001 and 2005, winning the Premier League twice and FA Cup twice.

阿仙奴正式宣布，舊將伊度（Edu）回巢擔任球會的技術總監，簽約五年，並負責協調教練團、青訓、引援等工作。另外，BBC記者David Ornstein表示，阿仙奴接近以2700萬鎊（3000萬歐元）簽下聖伊天中堅沙利巴（William Saliba），不過該法國新星會以借將身份留效聖伊天一季，在2020年夏天才正式歸隊。

伊度是阿仙奴球會史上首位技術總監（Technical Director）。他在2001至2005年間效力阿仙奴，協助球隊獲得兩屆英超冠軍及兩屆足總盃錦標，後來轉戰華倫西亞及哥連泰斯。2010年退役後，伊度出任哥連泰斯的技術總監，並在2016年擔任巴西足協的統籌（coordinator）。

伊度回巢後，有可能利用他在巴西乃至南美地區的人脈，協助阿仙奴搜尋當地具潛力的年輕球員，補充一隊及青年軍。

根據David Ornstein的報道，對於有「新華拉尼」之稱的沙利巴，阿仙奴答允讓他以借將身份留效聖伊天，條件就是把3000萬歐元分期支付，此舉將不會動搖今夏阿仙奴4000萬鎊的買人預算。目前阿仙奴尚在斟介些路迪左閘泰亞尼（Kieran Tierney），並希望多引入一名翼鋒及一名中場。

沙利巴身高1米93，在法國國內被稱為「新華拉尼」，因為許多人認為他跟初出道的華拉尼（Raphael Varane）踢法和類型相近，不只具良好的身體質素和上搶能力，用球能力亦上乘。沙利巴在今季才正式為聖伊天上陣，並伙拍蘇保迪（Neven Subotic）鎮守中路。

Tottenham attempt to hijack Arsenal's £27m move for young French defender William Saliba

Tottenham Hotspur are trying to stage a sensational last-minute hijacking of Arsenal’s move for French teenager William Saliba.

Arsenal were this week on the verge of completing a deal for the 18-year-old, who is seen as one of the most exciting young talents in France, after agreeing a fee of around £27 million with Saint-Etienne.

Part of the agreement was that Saliba would return to France on loan for the upcoming season, meaning that Arsenal could pay the transfer fee in staggered payments instead of using a sizeable chunk of their budget for this summer’s window.

The Daily Telegraph understands that, as of Tuesday evening, only small details were left to be agreed between the two clubs before the transfer was officially finalised.

But now Tottenham have made a late approach for the player and, according to reports in France, have shown a willingness to outbid their north London rivals with talks scheduled for this weekend.

Tottenham are able to spend more money this summer thanks to their qualification for next season’s Champions League, their run to last season’s Champions League final and their lack of signings in previous transfer windows.

Their dramatic late entry into the process has been further complicated by Arsenal’s executive team flying to the United States for the club’s pre-season tour. Head of football Raul Sanllehi and new technical director Edu were among those who travelled to Los Angeles on Thursday.

Tottenham have already completed two deals in this transfer window, signing Leeds United winger Jack Clarke for around £10m before agreeing a club-record deal of around £55m with Lyon for midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

They are in the market for a long-term solution at centre-back with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both coming towards the end of their spells in north London.

If Arsenal were to fail to complete the move for Saliba, after progressing this far in their discussions with Saint-Etienne, it would be seen as an embarrassment for the club and a major coup for Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Tottenham are trying to hijack Arsenal’s deal to sign the St-Étienne centre-back William Saliba.

The 18-year-old has agreed a five-year deal with the Gunners and the two clubs were only minor details away from finalising the move. However, Tottenham have made a last-ditch attempt to secure the services of the France Under-20 international by offering a marginally better deal.

Spurs have offered the same amount as Arsenal – ?30m – but with better add-ons. Arsenal, however, are still confident that the player will keep his word and join the club.

Both clubs are in need of new defenders. Tottenham may still lose Toby Alderweireld this summer with Roma interested in signing the Belgium international while Arsenal fear they could start the next season without Laurent Koscielny after he refused to go on the club’s pre-season tour this week as he wants to leave.

The deal Arsenal had in place for Saliba would have seen him being signed this summer but spend the next season on loan back at St-Étienne.
