Transfer news: David Villa signs for new MLS club New York City FC



Spain international David Villa has completed his move from Atletico Madrid to newly-formed Major League Soccer side New York City FC.

The World Cup-winning striker is the first player to sign for the club, which is jointly owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees.

Villa, who last month helped Atletico to their first La Liga title, arrives on a three-year deal ahead of the franchise's inaugural MLS season in 2015.

"This is a historic and exciting moment for the City family and the building of New York City Football Club," City CEO Ferran Soriano told the club's official website.

"I know David really well; he is one of the best footballers in the world, a true winner and in an outstanding moment of his career.

I'm sure New Yorkers will enjoy watching him play for their city."

Villa, who will wear the No 7 shirt at Yankee Stadium,

said: "Throughout my career I've always tried to keep pushing myself to achieve new targets and this represents another important goal for me.

"I want to try and help MLS continue to grow, through playing, working hard, scoring goals and at the same time try to make New York City FC become the best team in the league."

Villa was part of Pep Guardiola's illustrious Barcelona side between 2010 and 2013 and won the World Cup with Spain in 2010.

He could be joined by Frank Lampard, who is out of contract at Chelsea and understood to have held informal talks about a move,

as head coach Jason Kreis looks to assemble a stellar first squad ahead of kick-off in March.

Frank Lampard has agreed a free transfer to New York City - and Atletico Madrid marksman David Villa is set to join him.

The highly-decorated ex-Chelsea midfielder and the Spanish title-winning striker were

at Manchester City's Carrington complex on Saturday to complete the internal formalities of their respective moves.

Lampard and Villa met with Jason Kreis, installed as New York City Head Coach back in January by the Premier League champions' Chief Executive Officer Ferran Soriano.

Lampard broke off from his preparations with England for the World Cup to sort out his move.

Both deals are a huge statement of intent from City's US franchise which kicks off in the new Major League Soccer season next March.

Lampard is understood to be have agreed to a basic wage significantly less than the £150,000-a-week that he picked up at Chelsea.

That pay packet is expected to be boosted substantially by bonuses however with the England midfielder's signing a massive coup.


Lampard's decision to quit London for the Big Apple signals the end of his 13-year association with the club he joined from West Ham for £11million in 2001.

Since then the 35-year-old midfielder has clinched three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.

Chelsea's record scorer with 211 goals, Lampard has rejected a 12-month extension at Stamford Bridge after making 40 appearances in all competitions last season.


New York's capture of Villa is another massive coup with 32-year-old fresh from helping Atletico beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to the Spanish title.

Villa, who scored 13 goals last season, is also set to fly out to Brazil shortly for the World Cup with Spain, who are among the favourites.

The Atletico forward was spotted having a medical at the Bridgewater ahead of a move to New York City FC.



Here is David Villa, taking a medical in Manchester this afternoon before becoming New York City FC's first marquee signing.

The exclusive picture, captured by one of our photographers, shows the Spanish international at the Bridgewater Hospital in Moss Side.

City declined to comment but M.E.N. Sport understands the 32-year-old is here to finalise the terms of his move to the Blues' US franchise,

which kicks off in the new MLS season next March.

The swoop for Villa will send shockwaves through the game across the Atlantic and is a clear sign that NYCFC mean business.

He will join from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid after scoring 13 goals last season and will shortly jet out to the World Cup with his country, who are considered one of the favourites.

The ex-Barcelona striker is NOT expected to train with City or be eligible to play for them before the MLS season starts.

Speaking about New York City this month, Manchester City chairman said:

"Very soon you will be hearing about our first signing for our club in New York and it will be a very pleasant surprise I hope for our fans.

"This is a very exciting project we have embarked on. We have a wonderful team of individuals over there that is being set up, led by Tim [Pernetti], our CEO.

We have a great coach in Jason [Kreis]," he added.

"This will be another story of organic development. This is a club that is in a wonderful city, with a great fanbase.

I love how the fans selected our crest. It is a wonderful story and I think it is going to be a great success story. I am very excited about next year."

Atletico Madrid striker David Villa is undergoing a medical in Manchester ahead of a move to New York City FC, Goal understands.

The 32-year-old arrived at the Bridgewater Hospital in Moss Side on Saturday and is in England to complete contract negotiations with Manchester City's Major League Soccer franchise.

Prior to his marquee switch to New York City FC, whose season will start next March, Villa will be able to train with City's first team but will not make an appearance for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Villa scored 13 goals in 36 Primera Division appearances for Atletico Madrid this term and has been named in Vicente del Bosque's final Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup.

He joined Diego Simeone's side from Barcelona in July 2013.

David Villa to leave Atletico Madrid amid New York City FC reports



Spain's record goalscorer David Villa is leaving Atletico Madrid after just one season with the La Liga champions.
The 32-year-old striker, who is part of Spain's 23-man World Cup squad, said he has received an offer to join an unnamed club that he "can't refuse".
He has been linked with a switch to New York City FC, the Major League Soccer franchise owned by Premier League champions Manchester City.
"It is an irresistible project for me and my family," he said.
"It is very, very good. It is about football and I have to accept it."

Villa scored 13 league goals as Atletico pipped Barcelona and Real Madrid to become Spanish champions for the first time since 1996.
He was also part of the side which was beaten in the Champions League final by neighbours Real last weekend.
"It has been a great project for me both personally as well as sporting and now I face a new challenge
which is what I have always looked to do in my career and my life," he told the Atletico website.
"I would like to thank the people at Atletico and those that tried to convince me to stay, like coach Diego Simeone and the rest of the coaching staff."
Villa joined Los Rojiblancos on a free transfer from Barca, where he spent three seasons after signing from Valencia for £34m in 2010.
He has won 94 caps for Spain, scoring 56 goals, and helped them win the 2008 European Championship and the 2010 World Cup.
But he missed Euro 2012, where Spain successfully defended their title, with a broken leg.
