Messi surpassed Telmo Zarra’s record to become the player with the most goals for a single Spanish team,
as Barca prepared to face Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Barca will go into the clash with City as Spanish league table-toppers,
returning to the summit of the standings on goal difference following Atletico Madrid’s 3-0 win over Real Valladolid.
The reigning Liga champions took just two minutes to open the scoring,
with Adriano cutting inside off the right wing to bend a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the Rayo net.
And Barca’s sheer dominance was rewarded when Messi doubled their lead, nonchalantly chipping the keeper to
score his record breaking 336th career goal for the Camp Nou club.
Alex Sanchez made it 3-0 after 53 minutes before Pedro added his name to the scoresheet by finishing off a wonderful team goal,
turning the ball home after good work by Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta.
Messi grabbed his 337th career goal for Barcelona, calmly side-footing into the net before Neymar completed the scoring with a rasping drive into the top corner from 25 yards.

The Argentinian is the third highest goalscorer in the history of La Liga, level with Raul Gonzalez



Leo Messi’s legend continues to grow. The Argentinian broke Alfredo Di Stefano goalscoring record in the league and equalled Raul Gonzalez’s.
Thanks to his goals against Rayo Vallecano, Barca’s No.10 took his league goal tally to 228.
It only took the player 263 appearances to set this record, 66 less than his countryman,
who played for Madrid (1953/1964) and Espanyol (1964/1966).

0.87 goals per match

Messi has an average of 0.87 goals per game, while Alfredo di Stefano had an average of 0.69. The player with the best average in La Liga history is Telmo Zarra,
who played for Athletic Club from 1940 to 1955, he scored 251 goals in 277 matches (0.91 goals per game).

Messi equals Raul

In addition to surpassing Di Stefano, Leo Messi also equalled Raul Gonzalez’s goalscoring record in the league.
The former Real Madrid player netted 228 goals from 550 appearances (0.41).
Now, the Argentinian is the third highest goalscorer in La Liga, only Telmo Zarra (251 goals) and Hugo Sanchez (234) have scored more than Barca’s No.10.
