Peter Odemwingie joins Stoke as Kenwyne Jones signs for Cardiff




Cardiff forward Peter Odemwingie has joined Stoke in a swap deal that has seen Potters striker Kenwyne Jones sign for the Welsh club.
Nigeria international Odemwingie, 32, struggled at Cardiff since joining in the summer and was out of favour under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Jones, 29, was frozen out at Stoke after refusing to play against Liverpool.
City manager Mark Hughes said: "We're delighted to have signed Peter."
He added: "Things haven't perhaps gone as well for him at Cardiff as he would have hoped and he's really keen to start afresh with us."
Odemwingie has signed an 18-month deal with the club, but the length of Jones's Cardiff contract has not been disclosed.

Announcing the move on their website,  Cardiff City said: "Kenwyne Jones' move from Stoke City to the club has today been finalised,
subject to Football Association clearance.
The striker will be available for selection for the first time this Saturday in the Barclays Premier League home game against Norwich City."
Odemwingie, who scored just two goals in 17 matches for Cardiff following his £2m switch from West Brom,
could feature for his new side in Wednesday's Premier League game against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Trinidad and Tobago international Jones became the Potters' record signing when he joined them in August 2010 from Sunderland for £8m
and went on to score 26 goals in 115 appearances.

Transfer news: Cardiff and Stoke talks over striker swap deal



Stoke and Cardiff are in talks over a swap deal involving Peter Odemwingie and Kenywne Jones, Sky sources understand.

Jones is looking to leave Stoke after falling out-of-favour under Mark Hughes, and Cardiff are set to offer him the chance to move to South Wales.

In-return, Odwemingie - who only joined Cardiff in the summer from West Brom - could be set for a quick return to the Midlands.

29-year-old Jones, who joined Stoke from Sunderland in 2010, has started just four league games this season and is yet to score.

Odemwingie, 31, has scored just once for Cardiff since his move.

Kenwyne Jones has spoken to Sky Sports News upon his arrival at St George's Park for a medical ahead of his proposed switch to Cardiff from Stoke.
Asked if he was excited about the move, he said:
Of course! It's playing football so I'm really happy to go and try and help Cardiff City stay in the Premier League.

Nigerian international pens deal at the Britannia Stadium

STOKE CITY have completed the signing of striker Peter Odemwingie from Cardiff City in a player-exchange deal that has seen Kenwyne Jones move in the opposite direction.

The Nigerian international has signed an 18 month contract with the Potters and is the Club’s third signing of the January transfer window after Stephen Ireland’s loan from Aston Villa was made permanent and John Gudietti checked-in on loan from Manchester City.

The formalities of Odemwingie’s switch were completed today and Mark Hughes is hopeful of including him in his squad for tomorrow’s Premier League encounter with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Odemwingie joined Cardiff from West Bromwich Albion in September of last year and has scored twice in 17 league and cup appearances for the South Wales outfit.

After spells in Nigerian, Belgian, French and Russian football, the 32-year-old shot to prominence in this country with West Brom, scoring 30 goals in 87 top flight appearances for the Baggies.

Odemwingie has been capped 55 times by his country and has scored nine goals in senior international football.

City manager Mark Hughes said: “We’re delighted to have signed Peter. Things haven’t perhaps gone as well for him at Cardiff as he would have hoped and he’s really keen to start afresh with us.

“He has a good goal-scoring record in the Premier League and will bring a different dimension to our attacking options. I’ve no doubts he will prove to be an excellent addition to our squad.”

Chief Executive Tony Scholes said: “We were interested in signing Peter last summer when he left West Brom but we’re really pleased to have finally secured his services.”

The Potters, meanwhile, would like to thank Jones for his service to the Club during his spell at the Britannia Stadium and wish him good luck for the future.

Imposing 29-year-old front man Kenwyne Jones has been well known to viewers of British football since arriving at Southampton from Trinidad & Tobago side W Connection in 2004.
Born in Point Fortin in Trinidad, Jones spent three years at St Mary’s Stadium, making 71 appearances and scoring 19 goals in total for the Saints.
During his time on the south coast, Jones also had spells with Stoke City and Sheffield Wednesday on loan, impressively scoring seven goals in seven appearances while at Hillsborough.
A permanent move to Sunderland came in 2007 as the Black Cats prepared for life back in the top flight under then manager Roy Keane. Jones made his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United before scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win over Reading that September.
The 58-time capped Trinidad front man went on to score 26 goals during a three year spell in the north east,
making 94 appearances in total before joining fellow Premier League club Stoke City in August 2010.
Taking the Potters’ number nine shirt, Jones has scored 13 goals in 88 appearances during his three-and-a-half year spell at the Britannia Stadium with first-team opportunities limited for the Stoke frontman in recent months.
His career now continues at Cardiff City, with all at the club wishing him every success.
