Transfer news: Newcastle make move for Clement Grenier



Sky Sports understands Newcastle United have made a 'substantial' but undisclosed bid for Lyon's Clement Grenier.

The 23-year-old France international has been identified by Newcastle as the man they would like to replace Yohan Cabaye,

who is due to complete his move to Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday.

Newcastle have been keeping tabs on the highly-rated midfielder for a number of months, with chief scout Graham Carr giving his approval to the move.

Now Newcastle have lodged a bid, which we understand to be 'substantial', and the club are hopeful that Lyon can be persuaded to sell Grenier.

Lyon have already turned down big money from Napoli for Grenier's midfield partner Maxime Gonalons, but it seems that president Jean-Michel Aulas could do business.

Grenier, who has two years left on his current deal, revealed earlier this week that Aulas had told him he was prepared listen to offers made this winter.

When asked about Newcastle, Grenier said: "I have only just learned about [Newcastle's] interest from the press, like you.

"I have no idea what can be said or done at this time. At one point, the president said that if a good offer is made for me this winter, he would look at it.

"I do not know if he received an offer or not and I'm not at all thinking about it.

"For the moment, it is not in my head. I have goals with Olympique Lyonnais for the end of the season, in the short term. I focus on it.

"The World Cup is one of my goals. It is in a small corner of my mind. Is it better for me to stay in Lyon? For the moment, yes.

There are still many goals for me with Lyon."

Newcastle have bid for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier as they attempt to replace the departing Yohan Cabaye before Friday's transfer deadline.
The size of the Magpies' offer for the 23-year-old is unknown at this stage.
The France international has scored 12 goals in 89 appearances for Lyon.
Cabaye is expected to complete his move to Paris St-Germain on Wednesday for about £20m
as Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong has a medical at Newcastle before his initial loan move.
Grenier is one of a series of potential targets for Newcastle but his current boss Remi Garde hopes he will not be sold this month.
Newcastle counterpart Alan Pardew has urged owner Mike Ashley and director of football Joe Kinnear to reinvest a significant proportion of the proceeds from the Cabaye deal.
They host Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby on Saturday.

Transfer news: Newcastle target Clement Grenier coy over future

Lyon's Clement Grenier has remained coy about his future after Newcastle launched a bid for his signature.

Sky Sports revealed earlier this month that the France international midfielder was the man wanted by Newcastle to replace Yohan Cabaye.

They lodged a bid on Wednesday and Newcastle are yet to hear a response, but at an awards ceremony, Grenier was asked about his future.

"Sometimes we do not have our own destiny in our hands," he said.

Asked if he was definitely staying at the Stade Gerland, the 23-year-old added:

"I have not confirmed that, but you know very well that in football, everything goes very fast.

"I can not say what I know and anyway, I do not know lot of things on this issue.

"Like you, I read the news and I saw my name next to that of Newcastle. But I do not have more information in relation to it.

"The transfer window closes in a few days. We'll see by then. I still have many goals to fulfil collectively and individually with Lyon.

"I also hope to achieve one of my goals, which is to go to the World Cup at the end of the season. So it is not too relevant.

In my head, I do not think about the market and any possible transfer rumour."
