Former Ajax Barcelona Juventus Milan Spurs midfielder set for retirement



Barnet head coach Edgar Davids appears to have called time on his playing career after a glittering career spanning over 20 seasons.
The 40-year-old, who has was sent-off for the third time this season as Barnet slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Salisbury City in the Skrill Premier on Saturday.
And speaking after the game, Davids insisted he would not play again, claiming he is being unfairly targeted by match officials.

"I think I know for definite now that the league is targeting Barnet," he said. "I don't know how many games we have played now but there is weird decision-making all the time.
"It is ridiculous, especially the first one (yellow card) because everyone can see I cleared the ball. That was an absolute disgrace.
The other one for the red card was also a disgrace.
"I am a target but it is ok. I don't think I am going to play anymore because they are taking away the fun and I want the team to do well.
"If you look at the red cards, some are definitely red cards and some are exaggerated. It is hard to complete our tasks when a lot of decisions are against you.
"The fun of playing in this league, I have just lost it." The red card against Salisbury was his fifth in 38 appearances for Barnet after initially joining the club as player
and joint head coach alongside Mark Robson in October last year.
Davids' decision to stop playing comes on his first anniversary in sole charge of the club.


He has played 74 times for Holland, scoring six times, and has won 20 trophies during his club career since making his first-team debut for Ajax in 1991.
After winning the UEFA Cup, the Champions League and three Eredivise titles with his hometown club, Davids moved to AC Milan in 1996.
Davids failed to establish himself as a first-team regular with Milan and moved to Juventus 18 months later where he won the title three times and was twice an
Italian Supercoppa winner.He moved on loan to Barcelona in January 2004 before returning to Italy to play for Inter Milan before the start of the 2004/2005 season.
Davids won the Suppercoppa for the third time during his year-long stay at Inter before moving to Tottenham 12 months later.
After 18 months at White Hart Lane he returned to Holland for his second stint with Ajax in January 2007.
Davids had a spell at Crystal Palace before returning to Ajax as an advisory board member before resuming his playing career at Barnet in 2012.

BARNET player-manager Edgar Davids has reportedly told journalists he is retiring from playing after being repeatedly targeted by referees.

Davids was sent off for the fifth time in 38 appearances for Barnet and has said he is hanging up his boots.

Today's dismissal against Salisbury City came as his third red card in nine appearances for Barnet this season.

His team went down 2-1 away in Wiltshere as Carl Fletcher was also sent off for the Bees.

The defeat leaves Barnet in 9th place in the Skrill Premier just three points outside the playoffs.

Davids started his career at Ajax, before moving to AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Tottenham, Ajax, Crystal Palace and finally Barnet.

Barnet boss Davids could continue playing career

Barnet head coach Edgar Davids could still continue his playing career according to the club's assistant manager Ulrich Landvreugd.
Davids said he did not think he would continue playing after complaining of being targeted by referees following his third dismissal of the season in
Barnet's 3-1 defeat against Salisbury City on Saturday.

But Landvreugd, who faced the media in place of the Champions League winner following Barnet's 2-1 defeat at Luton Town on Wednesday,
insisted the 40-year-old remains undecided about whether or not he will play again.
"He said at the moment I don't feel like playing anymore which is different to saying I'm not playing anymore,"
Landvreugd said. "He said he has the feeling with the way it's gone, with the referees and the yellow cards,
that he's not enjoying his game anymore.
"He likes playing and he enjoys the game but it goes like that.
He doesn't have that passion anymore to play at the moment - but his line was at the moment.
"That's how he feels. He likes the game but if he's really not enjoying it because some people are really looking for him then there is the
possibility that he will stop but also a big chance that he will play."

The red-card against Salisbury was Davids' fifth dismissal in a little over 14 months as a Barnet player.

Landvreugd refused to be drawn on whether referees were trying to make a name for themselves by targeting his compatriot,
but revealed he hopes to see Davids play for Barnet again at some point in the future.
"It's difficult to say if they are really searching for him," he said. "
I can only say for the last game against Salisbury that they were two yellows and I think they were 99% not yellow cards, especially the first one.
"I hope that he will continue and if I was fit like Edgar I would still be playing also.
I'm hoping that is not his last game and I hope his last game will be at The Hive."

Barnet player-manager Edgar Davis appears to have performed a U-turn on his recent threat to retire in protest at being made a "target" by referees.

The Dutch legend claimed he was ready to end his playing career after he was sent off for the third time in eight league matches

during his side's defeat at Salisbury City on December 28.

However, the 40-year-old has since dismissed this notion and claimed he remains open to the prospect of playing again.

"The thing is I don't follow the media, the media follows me,"

the former Juventus and Barcelona midfielder said following Barnet's 1-0 victory over Alfreton Town on Saturday.

"Listen If I will retire I will make a statement if that is necessary, if I don't feel that is necessary then I won't.

"We'll see if I continue to feel like this - if I'm not having fun - because you should only play if you have fun.

"For me, I don't look at other things I just look at how I feel and how it affects me.

"We'll see (if I decide to continue playing). I think I still have time to get my drive back but I don't know, we'll see."

When asked if he was seriously contemplating bowing out of professional football on the back of a dubious red card at Salisbury,

Davids replied: "It could be. Why not?"

Davids initially moved to Barnet as player and joint head-coach alongside Mark Robson in 2012 but assumed managerial duties at the club

when the Bees parted company with Robson a little over a year ago.

He began his career at hometown club Ajax, winning 11 trophies including the Champions League in 1995 before moving to AC Milan in 1996.

He later played for both Juventus and Inter Milan and enjoyed a successful loan spell at Barcelona under compatriot and former teammate Frank Rijkaard in 2004.

Davids also played for Tottenham before returning to Ajax followed by a brief spell with Crystal Palace.

He played 74 times for Holland, scoring six goals for his country. The Dutchman was also named in the FIFA All-Star Team at the 1998 World Cup in France.
