Premier League: Stoke sign John Guidetti and Stephen Ireland



Manchester City striker John Guidetti has joined Stoke on loan for the rest of the season.

The move was made possible by Stephen Ireland signing for the Potters on a permanent deal from Aston Villa.

The Potters have Liverpool's Oussama Assaidi as their other permitted loanee.

Guidetti, 21, joined City at the age of 16 but his career has been held up by injuries and illness.

He has appeared twice on the City bench this season but the club feel he would benefit from having greater opportunities elsewhere.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes told the club's website: "We wanted to try and add different options to our attacking threat and John will certainly do that.

He's someone who if you get him in the right areas will make the most of opportunities that come his way because he's a natural goal-scorer.

"There were several clubs who were interested in taking him on loan and we're delighted that he has chosen to join us."

Stoke have not revealed the length of Ireland's contract, but Hughes said:

"Stephen is a talented footballer and has shown what he's capable of since he joined us.

"We're delighted to have made his switch a permanent arrangement as it also gives us the opportunity to bring in another player on loan if necessary."

Midfield star agrees permanent transfer from Aston Villa

STOKE CITY have today completed the permanent signing of midfielder Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa.

The Republic of Ireland international had been on a season-long loan at the Britannia Stadium but that agreement has been converted into a permanent transfer,

thus giving the Potters scope to move into the loan market again.

Ireland has made 16 appearances for Mark Hughes’ side and has contributed three league and cup goals.

Manager Hughes told stokecityfc.com: “Stephen is a talented footballer and has shown what he’s capable of since he joined us.

We’re delighted to have made his switch a permanent arrangement as it also gives us the opportunity to bring in another player on loan if necessary.”

Ireland’s move to the Britannia Stadium saw him link-up with Hughes for the second time in his career having had a highly productive spell under him at Manchester City.

He made more than 140 league appearances for City before joining Villa in August 2010 in a part-exchange deal that saw James Milner head in the opposite direction.

Guidetti joins Stoke on loan



John Guidetti has joined Stoke City on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old Swede has only made one appearance for the Blues so far but spent a successful spell on loan with Feyenoord during the 2011/12 campaign,

scoring 20 goals in 23 games for the Eredivisie side.

Prior to that, Guidetti was on loan for a month at Burnley in late 2010.

Signed as a 16-year-old in 2007 by Sven-Goran Eriksson, Guidetti spent much of last season sidelined by injury problems,

but the striker will now look to prove his worth at the Britannia Stadium where he joins former City midfielder Stephen Ireland and manager Mark Hughes.

He has agreed a deal with the Potters that will expire on 30 June, 2014. We will keep you informed of Guidetti's progress in our Loan Watch series.
