Sir Alex Ferguson book: David Beckham had to leave Man Utd

Sir Alex Ferguson says David Beckham had to leave Manchester United because the former England captain thought he was "bigger than the manager".
In his latest autobiography, Ferguson said he fell out with Beckham after criticising his performance during an FA Cup defeat to Arsenal in 2003.

The minute a Manchester United player thought he was bigger than the manager, he had to go," he wrote.

"David thought he was bigger than Alex Ferguson.
"That was the death knell for him."Beckham, who won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League crown during his United career,
was eventually sold to Real Madrid for £25m in the summer of 2003.
He helped the Spanish giants win La Liga before moving to the United States, where he guided LA Galaxy to victory in the MLS Cup.
Ferguson retired from management in May, ending one of the most successful managerial reigns in British history.
During his 26 years in charge at Old Trafford, he won 38 trophies and managed some of the biggest names in football, like Beckham,
Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Peter Schmeichel, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Jaap Stam and Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Ferguson, whose 26-year reign as Manchester United boss ended in May, also writes in Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography that:
  • Wayne Rooney lost his "old thrust" in his final season in charge because he was not fit enough
  • Cristiano Ronaldo was the "most gifted player" he managed and calls him a "wizard"
  • He told Ronaldo that he would rather "shoot" him than sell him to Real Madrid
  • The reason he fell out with Rafa Benitez is because the Spaniard made his attacks personal
  • Rio Ferdinand's eight-month ban for missing a drugs test in 2003 was too severe
  • The hardest part of Roy Keane's body is his tongue and he has the most "savage tongue you can imagine"
  • England will not win a World Cup until they can produce players as technically gifted as Brazil
  • He still does not know which Arsenal player threw pizza at him in the Old Trafford tunnel
  • Liverpool's decision to wear T-shirts in support of Luis Suarez following claims of racism was "ridiculous"
  • Ex-Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was wrong to play Carlos Tevez again after the player had gone on strike
Ferguson also describes in detail his version of the dressing-room bust-up with Beckham that followed the FA Cup loss to Arsenal.
"He was around 12 feet from me," wrote Ferguson. "Between us on the floor lay a row of boots.

"David swore. I moved towards him and, as I approached, I kicked a boot. It hit him right above the eye.
"Of course, he rose to have a go at me and the players stopped him. 'Sit down,' I said. 'You've let your team down. You can argue as much as you like.'
"I called him in the next day to go through the video and he still would not accept his mistake. As he sat listening to me, he didn't say a word. Not a word.
"'Do you understand what we're talking about, why we got on to you?' I asked. He didn't even answer me.
"The next day the story was in the press. In public, an Alice band highlighted the damage inflicted by the boot.
"It was in those days that I told the board David had to go."

Ferguson also allowed Ronaldo to leave Old Trafford, but only after Real Madrid had agreed to pay £80m for the winger.
"Cristiano was the most gifted player I managed," wrote Ferguson. "He surpassed all the other great ones I coached at United - and I had many.
"The only ones who could be placed near him would be a couple of the home-produced players, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs,
because they contributed so prodigiously to Manchester United for two decades."

Ronaldo had wanted to move to Real Madrid the previous summer,
but Ferguson blocked a potential transfer because he was unhappy with the way Real president Ramon Calderon had behaved.
Ferguson told Ronaldo he would rather "shoot" him than sell him to Calderon, claiming he would lose his "honour" if he agreed to a sale.
However, the Scot promised to let the player leave the following year, which he did when Madrid made a world record bid.

Ferguson also revealed he turned down the England manager's job on two separate occasions during his Manchester United reign.
He states he was asked to become England boss in succession to Glenn Hoddle and Kevin Keegan, but rejected the offers immediately.
"There was no way I could contemplate that," he wrote. "It wasn't a bed of nails I was ever tempted to lie on."

Ferguson's trophy haul includes 13 league titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.
He was replaced by fellow Scot David Moyes, who left Everton to take the Old Trafford job.
Under Moyes, the defending Premier League champions have made their worst league start in 24 years and lie eighth in the table, eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Sir Alex Fergsuon blasts 'Peter Pan' Keane in new book

Sir Alex Ferguson insists Roy Keane was living in a world of fantasy and had lost the respect of his team-mates when he was forced out of Manchester United.

The former manager has used his new autobiography to claim Keane, now a pundit, "thought he was Peter Pan" by the time
the pair fell out spectacularly in 2005 and that his departure "was the best thing that could have happened" to United.

The book, due to be published on Thursday, does not spare Wayne Rooney - "not the quickest learner" - or
David Beckham, either, and confirms Ferguson was twice offered the England job as the recently retired Scot settles some old scores.

His animosity towards Keane has shown no sign of subsiding in the eight years since their row erupted.

Their relationship began to fracture as the midfielder became increasingly outspoken about his team-mates during a lengthy period on the sidelines due to injury and finally broke down when he gave an explosive interview to the club's TV channel.

The now infamous MUTV interview has never been aired on the channel but Ferguson claim that Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes
and Ruud van Nistelrooy were among the players who walked out when they were shown it privately.

The 71-year-old recalls Keane and Van Nistelrooy having to be pulled apart in a separate incident: "His [Keane's] eyes started to narrow,
almost to wee black beads. It was frightening to watch, and I'm from Glasgow."

But after the MUTV interview, Ferguson says he could not get Keane out quickly enough. He told his assistant, Carlos Quieroz, at the time:
"He needs to go, Carlos. 100 per cent. Get rid of him."

Ferguson, in his book, said: "In one deep sense, him leaving was the best thing that could have happened, because a lot of players were intimidated by him."

The Scot's ruthlessness as well as his man-management skills were a major factor in his success at Old Trafford and won him many admirers.

The Football Association have been among them and he claims they twice offered him the England manager's job - before Kevin Keegan was appointed in
1999 and again before Sven Goran Eriksson took charge in 2001.

However, Wayne Rooney will have a different opinion of Ferguson's management ability.

They fell out last season and the Scot has not made any easier for his successor, David Moyes, to repair the damage with the detail in his book.

Ferguson said Rooney is "not the quickest learner", and claims the striker had to be dropped after a drinking incident two years ago,
was not fit enough to last a full game last season.

The book also repeats the former manager's assertion that the England international "wanted away" last term, which was a key factor in the player's unhappiness with the club.

Ferguson, outspoken as ever, says the way Rooney backed down after his 2010 contract also "made him look like a money man, and there was a residue of mistrust with the fans".

Beckham, who famously fell foul of Fergie in a spectacular dressing-room bust-up, was described as "the only player I managed who chose to be famous,
who made it his mission to be known outside the game".

Ferguson insists he holds no grudge against Beckham but things were different when their relationship broke down in 2003.

In his new book, Ferguson said: "He was 12 feet from me. Between us on the floor lay a row of boots. David swore. I moved towards him and as I approached I kicked a boot.

"It hit him right about the eye. Of course he rose to have a go at me and the players stopped him. 'Sit down,' I said. 'You've let your team down. You can argue as much as you like'."

Two days later the story broke Beckham wore an Alice band in public to highlight his injury. Ferguson reacted decisively. "I told the board he had to go," he said.
