Sources: City target Rodri wants Atletico exit

Manchester City target Rodri has told Atletico Madrid he wants to leave this summer but the Spain international is yet to decide his next move, sources have told ESPN FC.

Sources had told ESPN FC in April that Pep Guardiola had earmarked Rodri as a top priority for the summer transfer window and the midfielder has been likened to Sergio Busquets, who was a key player for the ex-Bayern Munich boss at Barcelona. Guardiola sees Rodri as the ideal long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

City are still interested in the 22-year-old and would be ready to meet his ?70 million buy-out clause to complete his signing but sources has told ESPN FC the Premier League champions still face competition from another top European side who are also monitoring the situation.

Rodri is considering his options and will make a decision before the end of the month.

City had originally been offered Saul Niguez, but Guardiola saw Rodri as being more suited to the holding midfielder role, sources told ESPN FC.

Meanwhile, sources have also told ESPN FC Atletico are in negotiations with rivals Real Madrid over the signing of Marcos Llorente as Rodri's replacement.

Atletico have already agreed personal terms with Llorente but Madrid are reluctant to sell him to their neighbours so the negotiations will not be simple.

Ok so Rodri has told Atletico he’s leaving, that was yesterday.

City are now making their move, but as far as I can ascertain it’s not quite as simple as that, with Bayern also sniffing around.

As expected Rodri will leave AtM -wanted by City, Bayern and even United, the first two favourite. They  will get a Busquets type (exceptional defensive positioning, good delivery of ball) but not yet at his level. MUFC'a analysis suggested bit slow in reaction and awareness.

For #MCFC the plan would be to play mostly Gundagan and Rodri in holding midfielder role, with Fernandinho sharing duties there and as a third centre back

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Rodri from Atlético Madrid after indicating that they are prepared to pay the Spain midfielder’s ?70m release clause. The Premier League champions have also opened talks with Juventus to sign Portugal full-back João Cancelo.

The 22-year-old is understood to have informed Atlético that he would favour a transfer this summer, with City now in pole position to sign a player identified as Pep Guardiola’s preferred central midfield target. Rodri’s representatives have already held talks with City over personal terms, with the former Villarreal player believed to be weighing up his options amid interest from Bayern Munich.

Born in Madrid, Rodri was released from Atlético’s youth system as a teenager but returned last summer for just ?20m. Diego Simeone’s side are hoping to sign Marcos Llorente from Real Madrid as his replacement for ?40m.

Rodri is set to sign for Manchester City after Atlético Madrid announced that the Premier League champions have met the Spain international’s ?70m (£62.8m) release clause. When the deal is formalised the 23-year-old will become Pep Guardiola’s first acquisition of the summer, and City’s record signing.

In an official statement on their website, Atlético have confirmed that representatives for the Premier League side and the player paid the buyout fee at La Liga’s headquarters on Wednesday.

The midfielder’s impending arrival means Guardiola can now focus on landing the second of his two major transfer targets. While Rodri has been bought as the successor to Fernandinho as the champions’ holding player, the manager also wants a centre-back following Vincent Kompany’s departure.

Guardiola’s first-choice is Leicester’s Harry Maguire, but the Foxes’s valuation of the 26-year-old – thought to be around £80m – is not currently matched by City. Beyond a centre-back, Guardiola is only likely to move to strengthen other areas should a player demand to leave.

Right-back Danilo is one who may do so, as he is only second choice behind Kyle Walker. Should the Brazilian ask for a transfer, Juventus’s João Cancelo would be assessed by the manager as a possible replacement.

Rodri: Manchester City complete £62.8m record signing of midfielder from Atletico Madrid

Manchester City say Spain midfielder Rodri is a "perfect fit" for the team after moving from Atletico Madrid for a club record £62.8m.

Rodri, 23, joins on a five-year deal and is City boss Pep Guardiola's second signing of the summer after defender Angelino rejoined from PSV Eindhoven.

"Rodri has proven himself as a hugely talented, young midfielder," said director of football Txiki Begiristain.

"He has as all the attributes we are looking for."

He added: "He works hard defensively, makes himself available to receive the ball and uses it well when in possession. We are confident he will be a success."

Rodri will wear the number 16 for City, the same number worn by Sergio Aguero when he first moved to the Etihad from Atletico.

The fee for the Atletico academy graduate surpasses City's previous record of £60m in signing Riyad Mahrez in 2018.

"What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I'm looking forward to being part of such a talented squad," said Rodri.

"It's not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times.

"It's a style that excites me, as do the club's ambitions."

Rodri rejoined Atletico in May 2018 after three years at Villarreal and made 34 league appearances as they finished second in Spain's top flight.

He made his international debut in a friendly against Germany last year and has made six senior international appearances.

City had made Rodri one of their main targets this summer, with Guardiola keen to sign a defensively minded player to bolster the Premier League champions' squad.
