Manchester City given boost in pursuit of Martin Demichelis from Atletico MadridAtletico Madrid have paved the way for Manchester City to sign Martin Demichelis by targeting Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld as the Argentine’s replacement.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini has been frustrated in his attempts to bolster his defensive options at the Etihad Stadium with Atletico demanding £5million for
Demichelis, just two months after signing the 32-year-old on a free transfer from Malaga.Pellegrini has identified Demichelis, who played under the Chilean at Malaga last season, after Real Madrid rejected City’s advances for Portugal international Pepe.
Demichelis has made it clear to Atletico that he wants to accept City's offer and move to the Etihad, despite his recent arrival at the club. However, City have refused to meet Atletico’s valuation of the former Bayern Munich defender, with director of football Txiki Begiristain informing the Spanish club that he would look elsewhere
unless they lower their asking price.
With City set to be without captain Vincent Kompany for up to a month because of a groin injury, though, Pellegrini is keen for the club to step up efforts to secure Demichelis
ahead of Saturday’s Premier League encounter with Hull.
