Liga - Madrid star Alonso faces three months out
Xabi Alonso faces a new injury lay-off of up to three months after breaking the fifth metatarsal in his foot.







The midfielder had been recovering from surgery undergone in June on a problematic groin injury and was expected to return to the first team fold at the start of October.

However, in a brief statement on the official Real Madrid website, the club confirmed that the 31-year-old broke his fifth metatarsal during training on Wednesday morning.

While the statement did not specify an anticipated return to training, the latest setback could see the former Liverpool man ruled out for a further three months.

Real Madrid CF midfielder Xabi Alonso will be out for several weeks after he suffered a broken metatarsal in his right foot during training.



The 31–year-old Spanish international picked up the injury on Wednesday and medical tests confirmed a fracture to the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. Having been in the final stages of recovery from a groin problem which ruled him out of the FIFA Confederations Cup, Alonso will now miss the start of the UEFA Champions League. Fellow midfielder Marcelo was out for three months with a similar problem last season.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has undergone successful surgery on a broken metatarsal bone.

The Spain international suffered the injury in training last week to further impede his chances of returning to first-team action following surgery on a groin injury conducted in June.

A statement published on Madrid's official website read: "Xabi Alonso has had surgery on a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot. The operation was conducted with as few invasive techniques as possible."

No prognosis was offered by the capital club but the former Liverpool player, 31, is expected to be unavailable for at least a month.

He will miss Spain's World Cup qualifying match away to Finland on September 6, while there is serious doubt whether he will return in time for the final two Group I games, against Belarus and Georgia, in October.
