Arsenal linked with defender Alderweireld



According to a snippet in Dutch publication AD.nl, Arsenal have spoken to Ajax about the possibility of signing centre-back Toby Alderweireld.
The 24-year-old, who is a fixture in the Belgian national team, joined the Dutch side’s Academy in 2004 before enjoying his breakthrough in 2009 when he inherited Thomas Vermaelen’s place following his compatriot’s move to London.
Despite wanting to retain the player, who has only one-year left on his contract, director of footballer Marc Overmars is apparently willing to do business should an offer in excess of ?7.5 million be tabled.
Speaking at the weekend, the ex-Gunner revealed that he’d already rejected an offer from Atletico Madrid:
“We have rejected the offer from Atletico Madrid for Toby Alderweireld.
“We were contacted this weekend but it was not considered sufficient for a player of the national team of Belgium.”
As well as Atletico, Spartak Moscow are believed to be weighing up a bid while the player himself has already turned down Norwich City.
It’s a link with a defender, which is at least positive, although whether it’s got legs* or not is anyone’s guess right now. Either way, we won’t have to wait long what with only six and a half days left of the transfer window. Tick, tock Arsene, tick, tock….

Arsenal speak with Ajax regarding defender

According to the Dutch side Ad.nl Arsenal have spoken to Ajax about the possibility of signing defender Toby Alderweireld.
Catching the attention of Atletic Madrid, the Spanish side placed a bid for the centre back but it is said to be too low for Ajax’s liking.
Arsenal sent someone to Amsterdam to speak to the club and with former Arsenal man Marc Overmars employed their as their technical director you would hope that Arsenal could use that to their advantage.
The 24 year old Belgian international has been with Ajax since 2004 and started to feature in the senior team in 2009 after Arsenal signed Thomas Vermaelen.
About the possibility of selling Alderweireld, Overmars said

“We have rejected the offer from Atletico Madrid for Toby Alderweireld.
“We were contacted this weekend but it was not considered sufficient for a player of the national team of Belgium.”

It’s good to see that we are looking at bringing in a defender, especially as the Daily Mail were reporting this morning that Arsneal were no longer interested in signing one as they believe Sagna can fill in at centreback and Flamini can cover as well. That being said, they were still blathering on about our interest in a keeper everyone else said we’ve moved on from.

Arsenal in contact for Alderweireld



Reports in Netherlands suggest Arsenal have been in contact with Ajax over the transfer of central defender Toby Alderweireld.

According to AD, sources from the Amsterdam club confirmed that Arsenal had been in contact for the Belgian international on monday, as they look to boost their squad.
Atletico Madrid have also been credited with interest, but had their bid of around ?4.5 million rejected, as Ajax seek ?7.5 million for the player, who has one year left on his current deal.
Unless this asking price is met, Marc Overmars, the director at Ajax, is unwilling to let the centre back leave, and will try to persuade him to sign an= contract extension, if no club successfully makes the right offer.
Interest from Russia has dwindled, as Spartak Moscow went for another option, whilst the player himself has already turned down Norwich City, after they had bid ?7.5 million.
Ajax signed Mike van der Hoorn earlier this summer to replace the 24 year old, should he leave, whilst Joel Veltmen is also pushing for a first team slot in the defence.
Alderweireld has been with Ajax for nine years, and after making his debut in 2008, he has went on to appear 186 times, winning the Eredivisie title on three occasions.
