Reports coming through claiming that Tottenham's sporting director Franco Baldini is in Valencia today, fuelling claims that talks are continuing to sign striker Roberto Soldado.

Tottenham are close to completing a club-record £18million transfer for Valencia striker Roberto Soldado.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas views the clinical Spain international as the candidate to end his long-term search for a truly quality goalscorer and recently-appointed technical director Franco Baldini has flown to Spain in an attempt to finalise the move.

Since Villas-Boas' appointment he has been forced to rely on the mercurial talents of Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe but the arrival of Soldado would allow him to commit to his favoured 4-3-3 system.

Valencia have rejected Tottenham’s bid for striker Roberto Soldado with the Spanish club’s president Amadeo Salvo insisting they must meet a £26m buy-out-clause.
The parties were reportedly close to a deal yesterday with Spurs’ director of football Franco Baldini meeting with officials from the Spanish club and Soldado’s agent.
But tonight it emerged Tottenham had yet to meet the full asking price for the 28-year-old Spain international, although Valencia would let him depart for north London should his valuation be met.
Salvo said: ‘Soldado can go if he wants – for ?30million and under our conditions.
‘Valencia never had any intention of selling Soldado. If he goes then it is because the ?30million figure has been met, not a cent less or a cent more.
‘The buying club will also have to accept Valencia’s conditions of payment also.
‘We agreed to meet Tottenham again to discuss the ways of paying and we did that because we understood that his buy-out clause would be met.
‘Speaking about ways that deals are paid is normal and this will be done in a way that suits the financial department of Valencia and not that of any other clubs.’
Salvo added: ‘Valencia has not changed its position. Soldado is an extremely important player for us and we don’t want to sell him,’ was quoted in Spanish daily Marca.
‘We’ll negotiate the method of payment up to 3rd August, provided that it suits us.’
Former Real Madrid striker Soldado joined Valencia from Getafe in 2010 and scored 24 goals for Los Che in the Primera Division last season.

TOTTENHAM'S pursuit of Valencia striker Roberto Soldado looks to be coming to an end after agreeing to pay his ?30m release clause.

The north London club saw a ?26m bid rejected last week, but after late interest from Liverpool chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Franco Baldini have moved quickly to get their man.

Valencia coach Miroslav Dukic hoped to keep the 28-year-old in Spain, but seemed resigned to losing his key player.

"If his exit to Tottenham is confirmed, we will wish him all the luck in the world," he said.

The Spanish international recently returned from an extended holiday after competing in the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

But Soldado only took a watching brief to see his current club lose to AC Milan in the opening of the ICC Cup.

"I spoke with Roberto this morning, he is a great professional and he will be a huge loss if he leaves," Dukic added.

Spurs' manager Andre Villas-Boas wants to acquire the former Real Madrid striker to show the club's ambition to unsettled winger Gareth Bale.

The winger has been subject of huge interest from Madrid and is yet to confirm whether he wants to stay at White Hart Lane.

Villas-Boas hopes the signing of Soldado will convince Bale to stay at the club as he attempts to mount a push for Champions League qualification.

The signing of the Spaniard will smash Tottenham's transfer record for the second time this summer, after the £17m arrival of Brazilian midfielder Paulinho.

Soldado has been a prolific scorer in La Liga scoring 81 times in 141 appearances for Valencia.

Andre Villas-Boas is keen to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season, and had previously been linked with moves for David Villa and Christian Benteke before turning his attentions to Soldado.

For a short while after the end of last season, Gareth Bale invariably reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham whenever he was asked. At the time it seemed he meant it. Why store up trouble for himself with false protestations of loyalty if all along he was planning to move? Far better to say nothing and let reporters read into his silence what they will.

However, negotiations seemed to have hit a stumbling block when Valencia president Amadeo Salvo rejected Spurs' approach for the forward, insisting they meet the Spaniard's valuation of ?30 million (£26m).
Reports have since emerged suggesting the club are confident in their chase for the 28-year-old, as they look to add to their recent additions of Paulinho and Nacer Chadli and bring the striker to White Hart Lane.
Soldado scored 24 goals in 33 La Liga games last season, while his total haul for Valencia currently sits at 81 goals in 141 games for the club.
A lack of goals last season effectively cost Tottenham a Champions League place but Villas-Boas has been encouraged by the recent revival of Jermaine Defoe, who scored a hat-trick in Tottenham's pre-season demolition of South China.
Although, with winger Gareth Bale reportedly "distraught" over the club's refusal to consider Real Madrid's ?100m offer for him, Villas-Boas faces a tough task in keeping hold of one of his prized assets while looking to strengthen his squad's frontline.

Having been linked with Chelsea hitman Fernando Torres this week, as well as Arsenal's Olivier Giroud and a possible loan move for Manchester United's Mexico forward Javier Hernandez, Los Che are assessing their options whilst Soldado completes his move to Tottenham.

However, Ortiz believes Valencia would need to bolster their attacking options even without the imminent departure of Soldado.

"Those targets are true," Ortiz said.

"Not directly associated with the Soldado subject, but additions are necessary to maintain our chances for success next season.

"Soldado's future is in the hands of Spurs."

Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more goals in La Liga than Soldado over the past four seasons, and replacing the 28-year-old won't be easy with the financial constraints Valencia are currently working with, a fact Ortiz is all too aware of.

"We have a long list of interesting names, but money is key to the subject," he added.

"The economic situation obliges Valencia to support a strategy and loans could be key this summer."
