EVERTON are preparing a £15m offer for Wigan star James McCarthy even after being told the midfielder will not be allowed to leave for less than £20m. The Republic of Ireland international was subject of two offers from the Toffees earlier this summer with both being rebuffed by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.
The Latics owner is holding out for £20m, however Roberto Martinez is hoping to tempt his former boss into selling the player with an offer just shy of the asking price.McCarthy was outstanding for Wiganlast season helping his side win the F.A Cup, but was unable to prevent the club's slide out of the Premier League.Martinez has already raided his former employers this summer by securing the signings of Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles.
The signing of McCarthy would equal the club record deal which saw Marouane Fellani join from Standard Liege five-years-ago.Martinez and his Everton side are currently in America preparing for the pre-season friendly against Italian giants Juventus.
And the Spaniard is looking forward to facing one of Europe's elite sides.
"It is a great challenge. It is a glamourous game against a team I have admired for the last few years," he told the club's official website.
