Benitez looks for Reina reunion at Napoli after Cesar trail goes cold


Napoli have launched a bid to sign goalkeeper Pepe Reina from Liverpool after failing in their pursuit of Julio Cesar.
New Napoli manager Rafa Benitez is a huge admirer of Reina and initially took him to Anfield from Villarreal in the summer of 2005 and has turned to his compatriot following the collapse of Cesar’s season long loan switch from Queens Park Rangers.

With uncertainty surrounding Reina’s position at Liverpool, Benitez is looking to take him to Naples and he can offer the 30-year-old the added incentive of Champions League football.





Reina has been a mainstay of Liverpool’s team over the past eight years and though he suffered a dip in form early in Brendan Rodgers’ reign, he finished the campaign in a positive fashion with six clean sheets in his final nine appearances.
But Rodgers’ decision to bring in Simon Mignolet from Sunderland at a cost of £9million has cast doubt on whether Reina, who is currently on holiday, would start the new season in charge of the No 1 jersey.
The Spain international, who is scheduled to join the rest of Liverpool’s squad in Melbourne on Monday, is one of the highest earners at the club and still has three years to run of his £110,000 per week contract.

Liverpool's Pepe Reina is set to link up with his former manager Rafael Benítez at Napoli on a season-long loan deal.


TheSpanish goalkeeper's place at Anfield had looked increasingly uncertainsince Liverpool signed Simon Mignolet for £9m from Sunderland in Juneand the prospect of having one of the club's highest earners on thebench appears to have forced a decision.


The Spaniard had beengiven time off after the Confederations Cup and was due to fly toAustralia to link up with the Liverpool squad on their pre-season tour.The academy keeper Danny Ward will instead travel to Melbourne asback-up to Mignolet and Brad Jones.
Benítez turned to Reina afterbeing frustrated in his attempts to sign Julio Cesar on a season-longloan deal from Queens Park Rangers.

有信心可以外借Pepe 姐係Rodgers認為Mignolet已經有足夠能力取代Pepe做正選
慳幾百萬人工 賺番幾百萬租借費 最緊要可以有正選機會keep住狀態
如果下年點都係諗住賣比巴塞既話 咁做絕對好過留佢係度做後備 更何況世界盃年Pepe都唔會想坐板凳
而且借比Napoli有Rafa有Valero 分分鐘幫Pepe重拾狀態

Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina and Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain are both having medicals ahead of moves to Napoli, according to Sky Sports sources.

Reina, 30, is expected to join the Serie A club on a season-long loan after Reds manager Brendan Rodgers admitted the Spain international's wage bill was prohibitive after the arrival of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for £9million.

The move would see the Reina link up with former Anfield boss Benitez and goalkeeper coach Xavi Valero.

Argentina forward Higuain was a reported initial transfer target for Arsenal before the player revealed Jose Mourinho was keen to bring him to Chelsea after their time together in the Spanish capital.

Benitez is in the market for a goalscorer after Edison Cavani's move to Paris St Germain for 64.5m euros (£56m) earlier this month.
