Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghenwill be out for three to four weeks after suffering an ankle ligamentinjury in their pre-season friendly with Sunderland in Hong Kong. That means he is likely to miss their opening match of the new season against Crystal Palace on Sunday 18 August.Vertonghen fell awkwardly on his left foot just six minutes after coming on as a substitute with the sodden turf a big factor.
Andre Villas-Boas admitted the awful conditions in the Hong Kong Stadium might have been to blame for the injury during Tottenham's defeat to Sunderland in the Barclays Asia Trophy.
A deluge left large parts of the pitch under water but both clubs were consulted at a pre-match meeting in which it was agreed to put back kick-off by 30minutes and play two 40-minute halves.
Onthe conditions, Villas-Boas said:
'I was concerned but what can you do?The pitch is what it is, it's always like that at this tournament. The conditions are poor, they're always like that.''You can’t change the conditions. They are extremely poor.
