West Brom have been alerted to Tottenham’s ­decision to listen to offers for Clint Dempsey.
But Spurs’ valuation and Dempsey’s wage demands could provide a major stumbling block.
Despite only signing the American last summer, Spurs are believed to be prepared to cash in on the forward.
WestBrom manager Steve Clarke has been looking at ways of strengthening hisattacking options and last week signed experienced striker Nicolas Anelka. Now Dempsey has also hit Clarke’s radar, but Spurs are keen to ­recoup more than the £6million they paid Fulham for him.
Dempsey scored 12 goals for Tottenham last term, and 23 for Fulham the ­previous season.

The United States international is a useful option as he can play in a number of midfield positions as well as in attack, scoring 12 times last season.

The Baggies want Dempsey, signed from Fulham for £6million on last summer’s deadline day, to line up with new signing Nicolas Anelka.

But the 30-year-old forward’s representative Lyle Yorks said: ‘I have been in constant contact with Tottenham and they are happy with Clint and he’s happy with the club.

‘He’s reporting back shortly. He’ll be back there and will be in Hong Kong [for pre-sesaon] and everything’s good.

‘There have been no meetings and no discussions. Not with Tottenham or with any other teams about Clint.

‘Things could change obviously if a team came in with a big offer but they are not actively trying to move Dempsey.

‘His focus right now is returning to the team and helping them qualify for the Champions League.’
