AssociatedHeynckes lifted the Champions League for a second time with Bayern, having won it at Real Madrid in 1998Jupp Heynckes bade an emotional farewell to Bayern Munich and said he would take a break next season, ending speculation that he will be taking over at Real Madrid, but stopped short of announcing his retirement.During a press conference on Tuesday, broadcast live on various German TV stations, he said: "I will go on holiday now."
The 68-year-old became the first coach of a German side to claim a domestic league and cup double as well as the European Cup in the same campaign. Bayern finished top of the Bundesliga 25 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who they also beat 2-1 at Wembley to lift the European Cup for the fifth time in their history. The Treble was sealed last weekend when Bayern beat Stuttgart 3-2 in the final of the DFB-Pokal.
Behind the podium was a huge backdrop showing Heynckes thrown into the air by the Bayern players after the Champions League triumph. It said: "Danke, Jupp!" (Thank you, Jupp!).
"I want to reach back a bit," he smiled. "After losing the Champions League final [against Chelsea in 2012] I was utterly disappointed, having worked with the same power that year. It takes you to the limit. I told my wife that I want to fulfil my contract and then not continue at Bayern.
"During the last week I came to realise I have reached a certain age where regeneration takes a bit longer. Especially after the celebrations over the last weeks, I felt I went to my limits."
On the subject of whether this meant the definite end of his management career, he said: "Personally, I don't use the word definitely."
The outgoing Bayern coach - who has known since January that he would be succeeded by Pep Guardiola as the club's next boss this summer - had previously been linked with a return to Real Madrid.
"I am not fickle but other clubs were interested in signing me. The rich clubs where money does not matter, and other clubs where I could have spent time in the sun.
"And also one club that right now is not on level with Bayern that stands out internationally. But I will go on holiday and will not work in Germany or abroad from July 1."
During a 30-minute press conference which looked back through to past 30 years of Bayern's history, Heynckes reminisced of how – during his first stint as Bayern coach - they nearly beat a Milan side with Franco Baresi. "The first German championship will stick. Many European nights but also the Champions League triumph and the Bundesliga championship this season," Heynckes said.
Bayern president Uli Hoeness paid tribute to Heynckes by saying: "He came as a stranger three times and always left as a friend. Jupp turned 25 players into friends. They followed him blindly. We can only be thankful."
Heynckes retires after 1,011 Bundesliga games as player and coach for Borussia Monchengladbach, Hannover, Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen. He also coached Spanish clubs CD Tenerife, Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid and also had a one-year spell in the dugout at Benfica in 1999.
Heynckes won four Bundesliga titles as a player and another three as coach for Bayern Munich. This season he became the second German coach - and only the fourth overall - to twice lift the European Cup, adding Bayern Munich's triumph last month to his 1998 Champions League success with Real Madrid.
The victory against Stuttgart in the German Cup final not only made him the first German coach to win the treble of domestic championship and cup plus Champions League, but also saw him lifting the DFB-Pokal for the first time in his coaching career.
Before the announcement German papers had already said goodbye to Heynckes, with Die Welt's headline reading: "With Heynckes a piece of humanity leaves.
"With Heynckes a coach bids farewell to Bundesliga who has not only coined German football through his work," the paper continued. "For a long time it was said he is too stubborn. But minor breaks, a few health problems and maybe his engagements in Spain and Portugal - meaning the life and culture - have changed him. When Jupp Heynckes leaves the Bundesliga stage not only will his successes stick in the memory but a coaching personality with a lot of empathy."
