http://www.bundesliga.com/en/tournaments/news/2013/0000264909.php International friendly | 14.08.2013 22:55:40 Germany held in six-goal Paraguay thrillerKaiserslautern - Germany showed their good and their bad side in a 3-3 draw against Paraguay at Kaiserslautern's Fritz-Walter-Stadion.
Defensive mistakes were punished by Jose Nunez and Wilson Pittoni as the guests raced into a two-goal lead, but Ilkay Gündogan and Thomas Müller swiftly brought Germany back on terms. Miguel Samudio snatched a half-time lead for the South Americans, and eventually Lars Bender salvaged a draw for the Nationalelf
Defensive concerns
The defence has become Germany’s Achilles heel recently with the USA putting four past Joachim Löw’s men in their recent outing. That said, the Germany coach refused to veer away from his attacking beliefs, although he was probably close to reconsidering after 15 minutes.
Germany appeared in control of proceedings, but Paraguay’s first effort on goal landed in the back of the net. So too did their second. Nunez opened the scoring for Victor Genes’ men when the Germany backline stood on ceremony as a long ball from Salustiano Candia picked out his attacker to drill the ball unstoppable past Manuel Neuer.
Good reaction
Shocked did not sum up Neuer’s expression, but it got worse within minutes as he saw the ball rifle past him again, this time Pittoni pouncing on a loose ball outside the area and volleying it past the FC Bayern Munich custodian in a flash.
It was anything but the best of starts, but despite the despair among the spectators, Germany maintained their self-belief and hit back through Gündogan within minutes. It was Paraguay’s turn to show some slack defending, or at least goalkeeping, with the Borussia Dortmund midfielder happy to oblige the finish.
Behind again
Müller then erased memories of the bad beginning to bring Germany level, latching onto Mats Hummels’ ball and keeping his cool for his 14th international goal. Having regained parity, Germany stamped their authority on the game with Marco Reus going close with a header.
The next defensive lapse was punished, however, with Paraguay regaining the lead in first-half stoppage time with Samudio left all alone at the far post to turn in Roque Santa Cruz’s cross.
Draw rescued
Mario Gomez replaced Miroslav Klose and he almost brought Germany level with his first sight of goal, but Roberto Fernandez turned his header away. There was nothing the replacement Paraguay goalkeeper could do about Lars Bender's equaliser, though, as the Bayer 04 Leverkusen midfielder controlled the ball on his chest and then volleyed unstoppably into the far corner.
