Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer is in talks over a £15 million move to West Bromwich Albion.

Tony Pulis, the West Brom head coach, has moved for Wimmer this week and is hopeful of signing the Austrian international in the next few days.

Wimmer has been made available by Spurs and looks set for a move to the Hawthorns after Pulis abandoned his bid for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

Negotiations between the two clubs are now at an advanced stage and Albion could even have the 24-year-old available for Saturday’s trip to Burnley if talks continue to run smoothly.

There has also been interest from Stoke and Crystal Palace but Albion have now edged ahead and expect to make Wimmer their fourth senior signing of the summer. It is understood that the deal could reach £20 million after various instalments.

Signed for £4.3 million from FC Koln in May 2015, Wimmer made only four Premier League starts under Mauricio Pochettino last season. His departure suggests that Spurs could be making progress in their attempts to sign Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

Pulis has made the signing of another centre-half a priority but Wimmer’s anticipated arrival does not mean that Jonny Evans will be sold.

Manchester City have seen a £18 million offer rejected for Evans, the Northern Ireland international, and are weighing up an improved proposal.

But Albion remain adamant that Evans is not for sale and the club is hopeful of persuading their club captain to sign a new contract worth over £80,000 a week.

Albion completed the signing of Gareth Barry from Everton this week, while Jay Rodriguez and Ahmed Hegazi joined earlier in the summer.

Sky sources understand that West Brom are interested in signing Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer.

They haven't yet made an official bid, but the Baggies have approached Spurs to ask whether they are prepared to sell. The news comes after Manchester City saw an £18m bid for Jonny Evans rejected.

Pulis is adamant he doesn't want to lose his captain, and is keen on strengthening his defensive options whether or not Evans stays.

We've also been told that Stoke City enquired about Wimmer's availability earlier in the window, but withdrew their interest after the £7m signing of Bruno Martins Indi from Porto.

Tony Pulis has played down reports that Kevin Wimmer is close to joining West Brom from Tottenham.

He said: "Whoever's telling you we are close, is miles away from that fact. We have a lot of irons in the fire with a lot of targets."

West Brom boss Tony Pulis will decide in the next couple of days whether or not to sign Tottenham centre-back Kevin Wimmer for £15 million, according to Sky sources.

The hierarchy at West Brom have sanctioned the move and it is now down to the head coach whether or not to use a big chunk of his transfer fund on the Austria star or divert his attentions elsewhere.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will allow Wimmer to leave Spurs, having secured a deal for Ajax's young Colombian centre-back Davinson Sanchez in a club-record £38.4m deal.

Wimmer, 24, has become unsettled at Tottenham after two seasons of irregular playing time and has also been of interest to Stoke City this summer - as well as clubs back in Germany - where he played for FC Koln before his move to White Hart Lane.

A new, young centre-half has been at the top of Pulis' list of targets for some time and he tried to sign England international Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough earlier in the window, and has also been interested in Barcelona's Thomas Vermaelen.

Should West Brom land Wimmer, Sky Sports News understands the club will still fight to keep hold of Jonny Evans, who was the subject of a rejected £18m bid from Manchester City last week.
