Chelsea pair Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand have pulled out of the England squad for Friday's World Cup qualifier against San Marino at Wembley.

Midfielder Lampard, 34, has a knee injury and full-back Bertrand, 23, a sore throat.

The Football Association confirmed they will return to their club for treatment over the weekend.

They will rejoin the England squad on Sunday for assessment ahead of the game in Poland on Tuesday.

Bertand and Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey were called into the squad after Kieran Gibbs pulled out.

Left-back Gibbs, 23, withdrew after sustaining a thigh strain in Arsenal's victory over West Ham.

Bertrand, also 23, made his senior England debut against Italy in August and was a direct replacement for Gibbs, while for midfielder Shelvey, 20, it was his first England call-up.

Shelvey was initially called up for the European Under-21 Championship play-off with Serbia by Stuart Pearce.

However, the Londoner is suspended for the first leg of that game at Norwich, prompting Hodgson to bring him into the senior fold.

His presence at St George's Park is purely to further his experience.

He could return to the Under-21s for the second leg of the Serbia game next Tuesday, although a decision will not be taken until the weekend.

eighton Baines is set to replace Ashley Cole at left-back for England in tonight's World Cup qualifier against San Marino at Wembley.

Cole was charged by the FA with misconduct after last week's Twitter rant but boss Roy Hodgson will maintain he has been rested for football reasons against a side ranked joint-worst in the world, viewing Tuesday's match with Poland the sterner test.

Baines is due to be flanked by Everton team-mate Phil Jagielka, with Chelsea's Gary Cahill the other centre-half and Tottenham's Kyle Walker replacing suspended Glen Johnson at right-back for his first competitive start.

Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley will anchor the midfield, the latter with more license to go forward, while Arsenal pair Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are primed to start on the wings.

With Steven Gerrard suspended, Wayne Rooney wears the captain's armband for the first time in a competitive fixture and will be granted freedom to roam behind club team-mate Danny Welbeck.

Hodgson is unlikely to deploy Joleon Lescott, Jermain Defoe or James Milner at any stage tonight, with all three a yellow card away from missing Tuesday's trip to Poland.

Theo Walcott has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against Poland on Tuesday with a chest injury.

Walcott was injured in the opening minutes of Friday's 5-0 win over San Marino after a collision with goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini.

"Theo Walcott has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup qualifier with Poland on Tuesday with a chest injury," said the Football Association in a statement.

"The Arsenal forward was taken to hospital following a collision with the San Marino goalkeeper on Friday night, he was monitored overnight as a precaution and following scan results today will return to his club for further treatment."

The FA are not saying exactly what the scan results showed. However, coach Roy Hodgson was upset immediately after the game and suggested there might be a significant problem.

"I don't think it is going to be good," he said.

"He is in hospital overnight. We can only hope it is bad bruising but he was pretty badly beaten up."

There has been no indication about a replacement being called up, although as England already have Aaron Lennon and Adam Johnson in their squad, it would be a surprise if Hodgson felt he needed anyone else.

The squad are not due to reconvene until tomorrow, when Frank Lampard's knee injury will be reassessed, in addition to determining whether Ryan Bertrand has recovered from the virus that prevented him from training last week.

The pair missed Friday's win over San Marino but boss Roy Hodgson was hoping they would be available for the crucial second game of the current double-header.

However, after reporting to England's Watford training base on Sunday afternoon, it has been decided neither player could feature.

"Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand have been ruled out of England's FIFA World Cup qualifier with Poland," read an England statement.

"Lampard (calf) and Bertrand (illness) did not take part in England's 5-0 win over San Marino, and will not be ready for Tuesday's game.

"Roy Hodgson and his squad of 23 players travel to Warsaw on Monday morning."

The news came less than 24 hours after it was confirmed Theo Walcott was returning to Arsenal after sustaining a chest injury in a heavy challenge early in the San Marino game.

Lampard's absence is a blow as it robs England of a huge amount of experience for such an important game.

However, Hodgson was impressed by the performance of Michael Carrick on Friday and the Manchester United man would appear to be an automatic replacement.
