Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini has been ruled out of the Euro 2012 quarter-final against England on Sunday due to a thigh injury.
Chiellini limped off during Monday's 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland, although coach Cesare Prandelli was hoping the centre-half would be fit for the weekend's game in Kiev.
However, further tests have confirmed the extent of the injury and Italy will now work on trying to get Chiellini fit for later in the tournament, if the Azzurri overcome England in the last eight.
"Unfortunately they confirmed the feelings from yesterday (Monday)," said Italy's team doctor Enrico Castellacci regarding the tests.
"We tested the player with an ultrasound that showed a stretch of the first degree in the left bicep, which is a previous injury.
"The defender has already started treatment but won't be there for Sunday.
"It is hard to forecast his recovery, we will see. It is clear though, we are in no hurry with his recovery, the player must return well."
Leonardo Bonucci replaced Chiellini against Ireland and he is most likely to start alongside Andrea Barzagli against England in the quarter-finals.
