Manchester City to offer £50m for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk as Pep Guardiola bids to shore up his leaky backline at the Etihad

Manchester City are planning a £50million swoop for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

Discreet talks over a move for the Holland star have taken place over the last two weeks as City position themselves to get a deal done next month.

Van Dijk, 25, is aware of City's interest and would find it difficult to resist the lure of Champions League football.

City's director of football Txiki Begiristain is working on the deal, but if he is unable to do business with Saints next month, the club will continue to monitor Van Dijk's progress ahead of another attempt next summer.

Pep Guardiola's side are beset with defensive problems, having kept just three clean sheets in 17 league games, and the City boss is keen to strengthen his back line next month.

Guardiola wants a central defender with Premier League experience who can go straight into the first team.

Southampton hope to keep their prized asset until at least the summer, but a bid of around £50m could force a change of heart.

That would represent a significant profit on the £13m Saints paid Celtic for Van Dijk in September 2015 and the club have shown before that they are prepared to sell their best players for the right price.

However, Saints are only willing to off-load one of their first-choice centre backs next month, which could scupper Manchester United's expected move for Jose Fonte. Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho remains keen on signing his Portuguese compatriot, despite closing in on Benfica's Victor Lindelof.

Guardiola has high hopes for academy product Tosin Adarabioyo, 19, and will not hesitate to give the defender more game time if he fails to land Van Dijk next month.

Meanwhile, City have told Sevilla that Samir Nasri will cost £21m if they wish to make his loan permanent.

Arsenal will take on Chelsea in battle to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton

Arsenal have made a move for Virgil van Dijk even though there is an acknowledgement that Chelsea remain favourites to sign the Southampton centre-half.

Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City have also expressed interest in Van Dijk, who is expected to cost around £50 million when he is sold this summer.

The 25-year-old has not featured for Southampton since damaging a foot in January and there is a growing sense that he has already played his last game for the club, who are determined to maximise his transfer value.

It is understood that Arsenal are prepared to match any wages offered by rival clubs for the Holland international who they considered when he left Celtic for Southampton for just £13 million in 2015.

If Arsenal cannot land Van Dijk they will look elsewhere to strengthen a defence which manager Arsène Wenger has re-moulded in the past two games – winning both – as he has moved to a three-man back line.

Key to that has been Laurent Koscielny, who impressed in the 2-1 FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday. “Yes, we are trying that,” Koscielny said of the new formation. “If you are asked to play as a three, you play as a three. It is a change we have been working on for a couple of weeks. There are always a few imperfections but with this system it is good for us collectively.

“To get into the final helps our confidence. It is important to find a bit of calmness in our game. A game like this definitely gives that a boost.”

The fact that Arsenal, who are also hopeful of signing left-back Sead Kolasinac, who previously interested Chelsea, when he becomes a free agent at Schalke at the end of this season, are looking for defensive reinforcements is an indictment of their current squad. Question marks remain over how well Shkodran Mustafi has performed since his £35 million move last summer while Nacho Monreal may leave and Per Mertesacker has not featured partly through injury.

Reds still cover Southampton man ahead of Burnley captain

Virgil van Dijk remains Liverpool’s No 1 defensive target this summer – despite reports linking them with a £25million move for Burnley’s Michael Keane.

Jurgen Klopp has put a commanding centre-back at the top of his summer shopping list and is keen to secure the services of Southampton defender Van Dijk.

Napoli’s Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly has also been heavily scouted by Liverpool this season and is viewed in a similar class to Van Dijk.

Former Manchester United defender Keane is on the Reds’ radar after a fine campaign for the Clarets, but isn’t viewed as a priority.

Liverpool have played down suggestions that they have already agreed personal terms with Keane on a four-year contract.

The 24-year-old England international is only likely to become a serious option for Klopp if they miss out on higher profile targets.

The Reds face serious competition for Van Dijk with Chelsea and Manchester City also keen on signing the £50million-rated Dutchman.

Saints boss Claude Puel i nsisted on Monday that Van Dijk would stay on the south coast next season but the defender is understood to be keen on playing Champions League football.
